Who's expecting?

With Easter here and beautiful spring weather, I thought it would be fun to see who all is waiting for or recently had eggs hatch.

I have 5 (last I checked) Owl eggs ready to hatch anyday now. If you count 12 it should be right on Easter...14 days would be Tuesday. They're in a basket type nest so checking is not an option. Everything seems in order, they started using thier bath, eating their eggfood and only coming totally off the nest if I'm in their cage replacing food or water. Even with all the other stuff going on in my life right now (a considerable amount) they're all I can think about :)

I'm so jealous! :) And very excited for you, too.

I can't wait until I get a few pairs of owls this summer.

My birds (goulds) finished breeding and are molting now--including the 6 juveniles (well, the runt is lagging, but the other 5 are getting their first adult feathers in). They've also been singing--apparently all 5 of the older ones are boys?! Looks like I'll have to buy a few more hens in additon to the owls this summer.

...and maybe a male canary for good measure.

I got three zebra's at 6 weeks Easter day and three societies ready to hatch anyday now. Starter birds but cool none the less.

Grats and Happy Birthday!

I'm still waiting for mine to hatch. Fourteen days now :( I just hope the re-roofing didn't effect them somehow. I hate those basket nests...way more invasive towering over the cage to try to see in than just lifting a lid for a peek.

My societies took around 21 days from when I *thought* they started incubating, so don't give up yet! Hilary

I got two babies today. One little egg left to hatch. I had no idea that they would hatch so close together. The zebra's took a day for each chick to hatch. I have these in a basket nest but thankfully they tore it up before they started laying. I get to see it all. In fact I watched the last one that hatched uncurle. To cool. 8)

Thank you for the happy b-day's. It has by far been the best one yet.

It's been 19 days and my owls are still sitting on their eggs. It's a basket type nest and some of the nesting material prevents seeing inside the front of the nest but 3 of the 5 eggs are clearly visable. I don't hear any begging so there's not much chance one of the eggs hatched and I just can't see it.

So time to face reality...5 eggs and no chicks. Man it physically hurts to even type that. I've owned them for a month now but since they laid eggs so soon, I have left them alone. Still, no signs of illness so I would like to move them out of the room they're in and into the room that will be their permanent home (quarantine over)

What are your opinions on what to do first? Move the cage with the nest and eggs in it and remove them a few days later? Or remove the nest and then move the cage once they settle back down? Do they give up after awhile and stop incubating?

In my experience they will give up after a while when things don't start hatching. However, don't give up hope for a few more days. Chicks don't usually become audible beggers until they are about 3 days old.

If you can get your hands on one of those little dental mirrors, they are great for nest checking.

My societies took about a week longer than I expected to hatch - I guess they didn't start sitting tightly as soon as I thought. I'd give them a little more time - can't hurt, right? Hilary

Yes I don't see the harm in leaving them alone for a bit longer. Twenty-one days, thats amazing. I would love to get my hands on one of those mirrors...I wonder if the hospital has anything like that.
