I've candled a few early embryo deaths too. They look very yellow and sometimes have a small dark object inside. Once you break them open you can usually see a small pink glob, sometimes with a black dot in the center of it that I usually take for an eye.

ikhom, have you ever candled an egg that close to hatching date?
I have some eggs that supposed to hatch yesterday, I candled them before and was quite sure that they're fertilized, and the parents were sitting really tight.
this morning I took all out and candled them again and they were just like all were solid, could hardly see anything in there :?

Yes, I've candled an egg on the hatch day. I couldn’t see a head or a beak inside the egg, as some of the other members, but I was surprised to see that the blood veins were still present beside the air cell. The rest of the egg was too dark to candle. Unfortunately, I don’t have any pictures to show for now.

To finish this topic I want to add that the egg that I was handling to make candling picture hatched.
I had to switch the nests after the hen stop sitting. I was sure that the eggs were dead because when I moved them they were cold. So, when this guy hatched it was a nice surprise.

This picture is from the webcam, so the quality is not great.

On January 31, after 3 days of incubation, the egg was fertile. I could even see heartbeats like never before. It was very close to the shell. But I'm not sure if it survived the move from one nest to another.
This chick came from the lightest egg I weighted. The egg was 1.14gm and the chick looks weaker.
Below is a chart of the egg weights of my Green Singers.

P.S. I updated chart.

Great information and great pictures! I have always wondered how the eggs are supposed to look when they are candled.

I want to show another case with the freshly laid egg. The egg was damaged. I presumed right after it was laid when the egg shell was still soft. The result is that egg has bubbles inside. I’ve also observed this with other egg that didn’t have any visible damage, but also had bubbles-the sign of damaged structure.
