Here are my two cents. Make sure they're not related (buy from a good breeder who can actually identify the parents - many colony breed), pick robust looking birds in good feather, and buy them young and condition them yourself so you know they're healthy and ready when you want to set them up to breed. Of course, the drawback of young unproven birds is that you may lose a couple of clutches until they figure out what they're doing.
