Thanks for sharing. Those pictures are great...but even an experienced finch keeper could have problems determining the type of fire they have. Many look so similar.
And in the case of having crossbreeds already.... impossible. I could see how many people may be crossbreeding without even knowing it. Just like with cordon bleu hens.
This will be a good study, thanks.

Woohoo! I didn't think I had saved it, but came across it just a while ago. That's what happens when you have too many favorites--sort of like the people who have 1000 best friends on Facebook!

Guess we'd all better get in the habit of saving any links that are posted, never know if they'll stay there or not.

I vaguely recall trying to tell them apart (African or Jameson’s) on this forum before?!
Yes - I think you were trying to help Liz and Donna regarding theirs. I know Donna has Jameson's or at least that is what she was sold - I don't remember what you told her in regards to what she really has or doesn't have?

My male Blackface fire can be seen here - which sub species do you think he is? nigricollis? The mauve/pink coloring has be perplexed. And, why I wanted the link to the website again because my book does no justice.

I'm still trying to get pictures of what I think is Jameson's.

I think your Black-faced Fire male is a Lavarta (like mine); but heaven knows I've been wrong before!

OI! That makes it even harder because of the female now. lol

Now that you say Lavarta - I can see it. My book has very dark markings and colors and this bird just doesn't strike me as dark colors but subtle colors everywhere - of course except the black areas. :-s

I need to get those pictures of the hen - see all this became a problem when I lost one of the hens right after I got them. I got what I thought was a pair of Jameson's and a pair of Blackface fires - I didn't note which hen died and now I'm not sure I even knew which hen was what! It was during the show season and I just didn't make the proper notes or band them so I would know but I really don't think they knew either when selling them....

And, of course last night the hen was out right in front of me to take pictures of and I didn't have the camera out because I was cleaning... Never a dull moment!
