Re: http://www.mariasbirds.com/
I didn't go through all the birds listed, but it seems that she is asking for orders on birds she doesn't actually have yet. Personally, if someone is taking orders, and then looking around for where they can obtain the birds for you, they are buying and then reselling. That is a broker.
To be considered a breeder, someone should have a breeding program, with breeding pairs set up, and then once they have babies, they can either wait till they are old enough to sell, or they can take advance orders on those babies. But to take orders on birds you don't even have yet is not breeding.
If she is taking orders on babies that she has, that is not made clear in the listing. She is listing more than 100 different finches and softbills. I find it hard to believe she is breeding all of them.

Dante, I admire anyone for setting up a breeding program, but I think she is putting the cart before the horse. If she wants to have a breeding program, she needs to get the birds first, then breed them, and then she can sell the progeny. That is a home breeder.DanteD716 wrote:She is not a broker but a home breeder. she is trying to ship in new finch species to breed.
If I am wrong, and she is breeding all these species, then I do apologize, but that is not the impression I get from the listing on birdbreeder.com.

Re: http://www.mariasbirds.com/
Most brokers don't list themselves as brokers, they say they are breeders. Technically, if they breed just one species, they are correct, they are breeders. But to me, it is not being quite honest. She does list these birds as imports, which means she didn't breed them, but often newbies don't know all this. To list all these species and then not actually have them is misleading. I can understand if a species is readily available, and she can take orders and then fill them, but many of those species are not readily available, and she may never be able to find some--Pekin Robins, for example. Perhaps she is working in conjunction with one of the Canadian importers.
Some time back, there was a breeder/broker who was taking orders for birds. You had to pay in advance, and then they were to fill the order. When they could not come up with the birds, they wanted to put people on a waiting list--keeping their money all the while. Not a good way to do business.
It's difficult when you are ordering birds from websites, as all you see are photos. You always have to pay up front, as no breeder or broker is going to ship out birds without being paid for them first. But then it leaves the buyer hoping they get something for their money. There have been a few cases where buyers paid for birds and then got nothing, so it is always good to check on such a business before ordering.

Dante, have you seen her birds? Does she really have black and white hooded nuns? Or will she find them if you order them? Who has purchased from her before?

I have never seen them. I think she is shipping in some birds, she only has zebras and societies. I only deal with my uncke and Dennis, between them I always get the birds I am looking for and I'm sure they have not bought from her
