How to split perler beads into rings

Post by cindy » Sun Mar 18, 2012 3:31 pm

I decided to try to split a few perler beads using a pill splitter...it works great. Once they are made into rings you can slice it open on one side with a thin pointed scissor, slip it on the banding tool and band the bird. You can band for family, offspring and sex.

Simply place the bead in the splitter, close the lid and it is sliced in half.

Debbie, I thought it would be tough to cut through but it is smoother and easier than splitting some of the pills my dog takes!!!

We are going to have some fashionable bing on our birds!!!

I've been using an exacto blade all these years and trying to hold that little bead and cut makes for interesting wavy beads or bloody fingers. Lol

Any rough edges if any at all can be smothed easily with an emery board.

Great idea Cindy! I kinda like how you can cut them in half cause I find perler beads big and bulky. Would be nice to have one half the size on their leg.

Where do you get pill slicers?

I am not sure what you have available in Canada but WalMart, Walgreens, Target carry them. You can also ask at the pharmacy.

Yes Walgreens, Target and WalMart and any pharmacy should have them...this one is a Walgreens brand.

Be careful, though! Some pill cutter blades don't go all the way down. Most pills can be cut by starting a slice and the pressure cracks them the rest of the way. This kind is great for splitting the bands. For slicing into rings, be sure the pill cutter blade goes all the way to the bed of the cutter you choose.
