Petition for Gouldian Mills

Post by TheWhiteFinchAviary » Mon Feb 04, 2013 5:49 am

I know this is an old topic but this caught my eye:
6finchfriends wrote: Are all birds sold in chain pet stores from that kind of breeding? I'm wondering because (around here) the chain stores always have a steady supply of birds from the same breeder (Barney's) and there are hundreds of these pet stores in Washington alone. ... Ya know, I tried to find Barney's on the internet and couldn't find any information. You'd think a breeding set up that huge would have something about it.
I spoke with a local breeder before the holidays who has beautiful Societies but they're clearly all related. When I prodded her enough she admitted they were related and that she had been selling them to Barney's for years but they never even asked or cared.

Inca's is one of the only local pet stores I would trust.

I would assume that all birds in a pet stores are related. If they buy from breeders they always take the entire clutch at the same time. There would be no way of knowing which chicks came from which breeder even if they use multiple breeders.

There is an awesome bird store here that only buys from local breeders, and I know they try to keep unrelated birds in separate cages so that if someone, like me wanted a male and female zebra finch, then they are able to be certain there will be no inbreeding going on...

That is good of that store to buy from local breeders. It seems to me that it would be so much easier for them to breed their own offspring to sell but I guess that is part of the education process as others have said. It would go a long way for any business (pet store or otherwise) to have a couple of happy gould pairs in natural cages for people to enjoy.
