I recently bought these to try after reading about them here, to reduce the amount of seed waste I was experiencing (not for "vacationing"). I've had them in for about a week or two now, and I love them so far.
They are pretty confusing at first when trying to put them together. I was going by the image instructions alone at first, but that didn't help, so I used the large image on the front as reference and that helped much more.
They wouldn't use them for the first few days, but eventually I started seeing hulls in there. What I've been experimenting with is holding the vacuum up to the entrance on the feeder, which immediately sucks all the hulls out mess-free, then shaking the feeder to allow some of the fresh seed to settle into the 2 ridge-trays where feeding occurs. Works great!
If they continue to be this awesome, I will be buying more of these. The design really is genius if your finches will take to them!

I have one of those too, and they work fine. A LOT less mess.
I'll have to try the vacuum bit..
