Book recommendations for beginners?

I work at a chain pet store, and I'm putting together a small animal care library for new employees. I'd love some recommendations for finch/canary/aviculture books that are short and simple, but that also provide a solid introduction to bird care. So far this library has older editions of Zebra Finches by Hans-Jürgen Martin and Canaries by Thomas Haupt.

Oh, and I'm doing this out of my own pocket, so books that can be found on the cheap are a plus.

I would order second hand books from Amazon.com or Amazon.ca.
You can get some absolutely wonderful books, for next to nothing.

I would recommend any of the Barron's series books.

They contain basic and pertinent information for beginners and experienced bird lovers alike, such as:
- Considering before you buy
-Introduction to particular species
- Housing and Equipment
- Feeding
- Caring For
- Breeding
- Healh Care
- Understanding your bird
- Some genetics

Another good little book about Zebra finches that comes to mind, is:
The Quick & Easy zebra Finch Care by: Nikki Moustaki

Also...

The Complete Encyclepedia of Cage & Aviary Birds, by Esther J.J. Verhoef- Verhallen, is an excellent book to have around.

Good luck with your little library.

Thanks! I started out looking for the cheapest books I could find on ebay, but a lot of them are 20+ years old, and I worry about how much of the information is outdated. But I do like the Barron's books I've acquired, and I recently ordered a copy of Verhoef-Verhallen's encyclopedia for my own library.

Try Amazon, they tend to have a nice selection of the Baron's books for next to nothing. If you order $35 or more from Amazon itself, I think you get free shipment, which is a big bonus.

I think you will not be disapointed with the Verhoef-Verhallen book.

There's a wicked book called "Grassfinches in Australia" by Joseph Forshaw and Mark Shephard.

Here is the link to the preview:
