New pink canary attacking my yellow canary please help!

Hi all

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I have had a single yellow and grey canary for about 6 months and because she was on her own (definitely a female because she lays eggs!) I have purchased her a pink coloured mate (not sure what sex it is) and the new pink canary is viciously attacking my little yellow canary. It chases her all round the cage biting her and holding her down at the bottom of the cage and pecking her. It also won’t allow her to use the water bowls or food bowls. It literally chases her everywhere.

I’ve given it a few days to see if they sort things out but it is getting worse!

I’ve now had to separate them.

Can anyone offer me any help or advice with this?

I really would love a male canary to go with my little female but I am assuming this new bird must be female and that is why they fight?

Thanks a lot

Liz, Try going to a bird show and getting from a reputable breeder, they can sex birds for you. If they are good, can even sex birds that are not singing, by looking at the vent.

Those two cannot be kept together. The new canary might kill the other one. Either return it to where you bought it from or rehome it, unless you want to keep it in a separate cage.

It's trying to take over the whole cage! Please separate them.

Thank you very much for your replies, I am going to return it today!

I did separate them and my original little yellow canary is much happier.

Would it be possible to try another canary? To see if they match? Or am I best off just keeping my little yellow on her own?

Thanks again

I've heard that canaries do well by themselves, so it's up to you, if you want to try another one. She might be happier by herself in her own cage.

I find the females are the most aggressive, if you get an aggressive one. I recently had one in a large flight with 5 other canaries, and she was always attacking the others. I took her out and put her in her own cage, and the fighting stopped. There's even two males in there together.

Two females, or a male and a female, *should* be fine together, unless like what happened, you get an agressive one. How big is your cage? You also want to make sure there's perching space for both. They use height for dominance, so may help having two perches at the same height so they don't fight.
