potential outcomes for zebra finches?

Post by apachetear » Mon Sep 13, 2010 2:46 pm

i have an adorable zebra finch with the sweetest personality, who i would love to breed just for her temprament with my hand tame male, who is just as sweet.

the female is chestnut flanked white and the male is a pied fawn ( i think he is fawn he seems a lot lighter than my other 3).

i have no access to their family history as they are pet shop birds.

i plan on breeding for temprement and personality for a few years before trying for specific colours and learning about the gentics properly, i think temprement is very important, as i think its something that can be inherited. anyone else think this?

was just curious what kind of birds i could expect from these 2?

thanks in advance =)

My guess is:
fawn split to pied females
grey split to pied, CFW & fawn males

I'm unsure about multiple sex linked mutations. I know CFW & fawn combine randomly but I don't know if finches can be split for both or if it is just one or the other. Hopefully someone here knows.

On temperament, I do think that it can be inherited/learned.

Good luck and make sure to post pictures of the babies!
ADULTS:
4 zebras, 2 bronzewings, 2 green singers & 2 owls

JUVENILES:
2 hand tame zebras- Julius & Caesar

CHICKS:
5 zebra fledglings, 2 handfed owl nestlings

Yes characteristics can be inherited, I think most breeders have noticed and agree on that.

CFW and fawn are both sex linked, so with a fawn father all female birds from him will be fawn and the boys will be split. You will not get CFW chicks unless the male is split as well, but the gene will carry on to the male chicks.

Pied shows itself usually as flanks of white here and there. If your male is simply lighter he might be carrying some other genes. But on the pied part, it seems to be very random how much pied the offspring gets and if at all.

And then again, zebras... you never know what you'll get :)

thanks for the responses. i willl start breeding them within the next year me thinks, she's very small at the mo am hoping she might grow a bit more, mentally and physically.
i'm not sure if he's a fawn, he's definitely pied, i'll post a pic of him up here, once i've worked out how!
