Ever Seen a Half-Sider Zebra?

Post by annague » Tue Jan 25, 2011 10:29 pm

I know I'm going to be 'rode out of town' by you all, but I have no pictures at this moment  I think I have a fawn half-sider zebra that just got it's adult plumage. It has faint but definite cheek patches but no other male markings except for half of it's tail is barred. Other than that it looks like a female fawn Zebra.

Are half-sider Zebras pretty common?

I'll include pictures tomorrow.

Anna...can't wait to see the pictures!! I can belive it...some of my black cheek offspring I though were females but they have flank makings on one side and half faint chest bars on one side. One is definately a boy, he sings!

Zebras are like a box of chocolates...ya just don't know what you will get!

It could also be a slow molter that needs to really work on getting his "look" down pat!

Re: Ever Seen a Half-Sider Zebra? Update With Pictures Feb

Well I finally got a chance to take a few pictures so I'll attach them. I've called this little hen Rosy.... maybe she's just a regular hen with some cheek color. I don't know -- I haven't had Zebra's very long but none of my other hens have colored cheek patches like this. So anyway... let me know what you think.

Here she is from the side - -I decided her tail is rather normal just the stripes are quite a bit smaller on one side. :)

She is a hen. Many mutations of zebras allow for the hens to have cheek patches.... complicating the sexing for many. Here is a link to a fawn cheek and some crosses, there is also a black cheek..... there are so many combinations that can produce thie marking on hens. I like the peachy cheeks on them, though I get tired of trying to convince buyers that they are girls

Thank you, Candace! My zebras are very new to me and I didn't know the hens could have patches -- I kind of like them, too!
