I think it has a too bright yellow belly for a hen, but maybe it's just the photo that has a strong yellow tint

Looks like a male... my female yellowback has a yellow a lot more dilute.

How long have you had this bird Bill
I am asking because I have a yellow hen (yes it is a she, babies to prove it
) with a very dark belly.

Looks female to me - males don't generally have so much color throughout the beak, but more of a "lipstick kissed" look.
Female yellows on the other hand generally tend to have that thick wash of color throughout the beak.

Most definately a hen and from the looks of her extra bright beak she looks to be in breeding condition! Just as green back hen's beaks turn dark so do yellow hens but the fact that yellow hens show no melanin the beak shows more red (or orange in the case of a ytb) Very pretty girl you have there Bill, I can see why she is one of your favorites
