phaeo x phaeo=phaeo only?

Post by lstyles » Fri Jun 03, 2011 1:27 am

I have been looking at the genetics of zebra finches and just picked up a pair of phaeos. Will phaeo x phaeo produce only phaeo? I am thinking it will because the BB is recessive so they must both be DF for the BB. For the FF part they should also both be DF FF or they would be silver. Do I have this right?
thanks,
Lori

That sounds about right. But Zebras being Zebras you never know what mutations are lying in wait, only to be triggered by the pairing of your two birds. Phaeos are beautiful birds. Sometimes the orange is more prevalent than others. We had two boys, brothers from the same clutch, and the one had a full extension of the orange color while his brother's coloring much more subtle.

Sometimes Orange Breast is hidden in there as well, which can be difficult to discern. Efinch has a nice breakdown of the mutation on his Florida Fancy page.

Don't be surprised if Single factor does pop up in your attempts to breed. We've gotten a few from our boys, one of which even carried the nice extension of orange coloring through out his face / breast area. Quite a stunning young man.

If you get the opportunity, you'll have to post some pics of your couple and keep us updated on their progress. Very anxious to see what they produce for you.

Here are my pair. As I look at the male I wonder if maybe he isn't a single factor as he is sort of tan-gray on back. What do you think? Sorry the photos aren't very good.

The guy I bought them from said they are a bonded pair who have had one clutch about 6 months ago. They seem quite attached to one another and I think this pair will be successful....will keep you updated.

Very handsome couple you have there. From our original two Phaeos boys we got 10 birds (4 clutches) All we had available to pair with them at the time were a Fawn hen (split to BC) and what we think is a Fawn C/CFW hen (slightly pied) all resulting birds were FF of some degree. 2 SF/FF hens 1 DF/FF hen 2 SF/FF males and 5 DF/FF males. Some of the double factor boys have, in varying degrees, that same golden sheen that your male shows. In one it is especially pronounced. In all honesty I'm not sure if that makes them / him a SF or a DF. Fairly certain ours are mixed with Orange Breast as well, so maybe that's an after effect from that?
