Would it sound terrible if I said I was disappointed in that all the babies are "gray" in color. Will I ever get a CFW from this pair. Don't get me wrong, I love them. I used my knowledge of tiel genetics and I am learning basically the genetics are "backwards". I still love them all. Can I ask, if 1/2 the babies are split how do you know which ones? I'm going to take probably all day to try to post another pic of babies and parents. I am HORRIBLE with this picture thing.

Don't worry about it and take your time with the photos. They might be all grey fledglings but (I think) until they molt you won't know what you have. I have two little zebra fledglings and I sure don't know what I have. One is dark, one is light. That's all I know for now  .

thank you for the instructions to do the photos. I'm still trying to "see" my photos on the camera!! I am hopeless. Maybe by July 4th I'll have pics. lol

I guess I'm rushing it when it comes to fledgling color. Just that this is my first pair of finches and I'm actually all excited about this new adventure.

I bred large parrots years ago, parakeets, canaries but never finches. I think I found my nitch. I love these little guys. How could you not.

Also have to say I"ve never seen parents so diligent. When you look at the babies you're afraid that their crops are going to explode they are so full. It's actually scary to see. Great parents.

Fingers crossed here. On a different computer. If this pic of the male comes up I'm gonna faint.

This pic is of the other side of my male. Maybe between the two pics on this site of male each pic with left and right sides, you all can make an educated guess.

Alot of posts saying Pied. He has alot of gray for a pied. Maybe not a great one, but ok. I've seen pied's with alot of white with a splash of gray. Ok here comes the pic:

I'm no expert but I think you have a beautiful pied Zebra cock there! It doesn't matter how much white he has or how much color. I've seen pied birds like my saddleback nearly all white (that comes from breeding pied to pied to get more and more white) and I've seen pieds with just a little white on them. He's very pretty and I'm sure they will have some awesome babies!

6finchfriends,
Thank you for the compliment. I'm just in love with these little ones. At this point watching the babies growing and crying for food and having the greatest parents, they will be very healthy and have a very good home. Color isn't a priority. I just like the surprise of it all. But this is a great serious hobby for me and am determined to learn. This site has so many wonderful people post after post to help me that I'm overwhelmed. My sincerest thanks to everyone who took and will take the time in the future for all of your help. Lyn

Yes definately a Grey Pied.

Grey pied cock to CFW hen will always result in 100% Normal Grey chicks split for CFW and Pied. unless the cock bird is already split for CFW or the hen is split for pied. If so then you could get something different but chances are not good.

I'll have to keep you under my favorites. when I get zebras and need baby genetics your my guru. Can you know which sex of the the baby finches would be splits

Since they will all be gray, is there a way to know who is split to what. So the babies will be straight gray in color, no pieds. I Understand that right?

One more question: genetics for cockatiels-if a tiel is split to pied, there's a white spot on the head.

Do finches have a similar thing if split to pied?

Yes Zebras do show it if they are split for Pied.

efinch.com: It will usually show on the primary wing
feathers and the chin. Some birds show no white feathers at all.

Pied bird can vary from having just few white feathers, to All white body!

Here are few pied birds from me

this bird is, like said above, Split for Pied.
Only showing Pied markings on Primary Wing feathers.

OMG!! Your birds are gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!! Did you breed for these colors or get some from a breeder. If I'm learning the fawn is a female but your two males have me baffled. One I see has red cheek patches and the other doesn't. I thought all male zebras had cheek patches. I don't know where you live but I'd drive for days to get the colors you have. Absolutely beautiful!! Thanks. I'll be looking at these pics for a while. It's like looking at your first rainbow. Being a newbie, I'm in awe of the information I've gotten here and the pics are...what can I say....perfect!! Lyn

Ahh, Thank you O:)
I really appreciate your words :)

Well I breed two of these birds, The fawn split for pied
and the little miss cutie the Fawn pied female.

I am not trying to breed pieds at the moment,
I am more concentrating on Black breasted, Black cheeks and Orange breasted birds.

But I would like to make some pieds in the future.
I really like heavy pied birds, almost white, or with alot of white patches.

yes, Almost all zebra males have colored cheeks
except for few mutations.
Like white, sometimes pied, dominant silvers (white cheeks) and I think also the dominant cream..

You are so knowledgeable it's incredible! I don't know if I'll ever get the hang of all the letters associated with genetics. I just know the 4 babies (one didn't make it) I have are big and fat and healthy. I have such a good mom and dad.
PS. I actually played around and uploaded a pic in the gallery. Still can't figure out the avatar. I'm going to make "baby food" now. Check in later. Again, many, many thanks. Lyn
