guess i'll start by once again apologizing for my fuzzy pics

my photographer friend is tired of taking pics of my birds every time i think a new feather pops out
so my little fledglings from my dilute male and my female of questionable head color (
http://www.finchforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=14072) are almost old enough to be on their own and moved into their big birdy cages. so far i know for sure that i have 2 yellow females and a dilute male. the other 2 appear to be normal so i can't tell their sex. looking at them, however, one of them is definitely darker than the other one. one's head and back look darker. and their chests are pretty obviously different shades. my last bunch of fledglings all looked the same until they started their molt, so i don't know if fledglings can come in different shades or if maybe their difference in color is an indication of sex and/or color variation. i took a few pics of them and i thought i'd let the experts take a look and tell me what you think!

I don't know anything about gouldian coloring, but you're pictures are great- not fuzzy at all! Beautiful birds!

Lovely youngsters.
I've had quite a few green back youngsters come out of the nests and they all have various shades of green.

well i've only had a few clutches so far, so i'm still pretty new to the wide world of breeding gouldians! so, of course, any little differences i see are gonna get me excited.

i have learned in my short time that breeding gouldians can be a surprising grab bag, though. both pairs i've bred have given me surprise babies. so i guess for now the forum is just gonna have to suffer through seeing pics every time i think something is off. i know how much you guys hate pictures!

Good looking juvies there! They could both colour up and look identical after they moult out or they could be different head and breast colours. That's one of the many endearing qualities of Gouldians... the mystery of the juvies' colours!

well based on the pair's last clutch, males should be RH/PB and females should be BH/PB
i hate having to be patient!!

he he
Being impatient is a bad combo with breeding gouldians.
Waiting for gouldians to color in is worse than watching paint dry...it takes MONTHS. For me the only "shortcut" is when I see one of the juv singing or trying to sing. Then it is a male, and I can look up what the males "should" be, using this forecaster.

But the hidden splits in the parents has surprised me. I got an OH-PB-YB from two RH-PB/WB-YB parents. The breeder did not mention they were split for OH. A very nice surprise.

so i looked at my birds today and i think the darker baby is female. i see a few black feathers peaking out. i could be wrong cuz where the feathers are, they could be far enough back on the head to be the beginnings of the black ring around a red mask. so exciting! but i'm going out of town for a week and won't be able to check their progress

at least maybe i'll come home to some surprise new feathers!

well i have confirmation! the darker colored one is getting black feathers in it's mask, which means it's a girl. the lighter one hasn't started getting his colors yet, but he was singing his little heart out for me a few minutes ago!

it's crazy how good you guys are at telling these things
