Heavily pied??

Post by finchman101 » Wed Oct 05, 2011 7:25 pm

I was inspecting all my zebra finch nests today and noticed one of the babies in there looks as if it is very heavily pied with only very small fawn markings. It still has a few days before it fledges but I'm not sure if it's better to have more pied or what??
I will post up pics once it fledges.

Pied is pied...and it is hard to get rid of and can undo certain colors in certain mutations. The penguin mutation can not be mixed with it since pied removes the orange cheeks in the male penguin.
To read more about pied go to:
http://www.efinch.com/species/piedzeb.htm

these are what you can combine them with and what does not work well with pied according to the above site:

"Combinations
The pied mutation can be combined with any of the other mutations. It is best combined with the dark mutations like Black Face, Black Breast and Black Cheek or with Grays and Fawns that will give the white areas enough contrast to be seen.

It should not be combined with white mutations, except for the all White, or pattern mutations like the Penguin. The white blotches of the Pied mutation when combined with white mutations like CFW, Florida Fancy or Fawn Cheek tend to ruin the effect of the orange markings on the white body. The dilute varieties like Dominant Silver also do not offer the contrast needed to make a very attractive combination."

I like pied with certain mutations like normal grey, fawn and isabel, but I try to keep it from other mutations like BC.

Mostly it is just about what you like and whether or not you want to keep your flock "pure" of pied.

I also like the fact that I get a lot of pied white, also they are quite popular when it comes to selling birds to non-breeders.

I have about 30 zebras in an aviary at the moment and I can guarantee every single one of them has pied in them or they are pied, for example like, normal pied, pied fawn are the most common. I only have one pair which I believe is not pied but I wouldn't mind being pied as they are black face and orange breasted fawn which would look alright as the white would stand out. Currently they have four babies so I can't wait to see what they end up like, pied or not pied. :D
