I found a split BB looking feather!
here, i will discribe it!
So i was doing my first sweep(of about 10)of the day this morning and there were a bunch of tail feathers all over the floor. well that's exaggerating a bit, three tail feathers on the floor!
One looked pretty normal. three roundish spots of white with black in between. the second one has two white spots that connect with a THIN line of white that goes through the shaft of the feather right down the middle until it connects with the second spot of white.
The third feather is strait up /BB hourglass but it is three spots that look melted together and there is a very light orangish but most likely fawn spot in between where the last white spot and the middle white spot is. where the black line would be.
Picture soon!

the three at the bottom are from one of the chicks. their tail feathers look completely normal except for the new ones coming in!

Katie...the one on the left bottom yes and the one in the middle.
Sometimes BB does not show in the tail....parents hide the trait well sometimes. One of the parents is split, as you know it is recessive. If one parent has the gene all babies inherit it. Now each little baby is split to BB so you need a full visual BB or a split BB to get full BB babies!!
I know you have wanted BB for sometime now...you are halfway there!!! Are you jumping for joy??? Bet you are!

Re: I found a split BB looking feather!
I am SO jumping for joy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i managed to grab lolita(she got out of the cage and my ferrets are out so i had to shut my room door and catch her so that she did not fly away and get eaten.)
She has some of these tail feathers! not all of the tail feathers are like this though, the larger ones look normal. it is the ones that are closer to the body(but not the closest ones) that look like these! most of hers look like the one that has the tiny white line.
All that time i was so excited, then disappointed and now i am so happy!!! i HAVE to get a BB boy(or split) for Tahny! i have to!!!
who knew what could have came from a pet store bird?
YAY!!

i am so excited! Cindy, would this explain Tahny's really thin tear mark? i know BB females tend to lose their tear. would splits make the tear thin? and as well as remember when i thought Gus might not be a girl because of the tiny bit of orange in her cheek, could this have been because of that?
and they have a fawn color to the stripes in the tail(which you can't really tell in the pic because i am in my basement)
sorry for unloading all of the questions, these are ones i have been asking for about as long as i have been here on the forum!

Re: I found a split BB looking feather!
Katie, I do not want to get your hopes on this and this is just speculation and you may need to see what hapens in the next molt...but when females are also split to OB sometimes you see it in the cheek of female, it may be a small amount or just on one side.
I am just saying it is possible. OB is recessive as well, only one parent is needed to pass the gene on...so if you paired it with a mat that is full BB split to OB nd you get and or OB then you know.
Right now I have young in the nest...Mom is fawn split to BB?OB dad is dark dark gray split to BB...his cheek patch has a thin line or orange that goes up and around the eye...so I am hoping for BBOB...the young are just a week old.
I also found out one of my penguin boys is split to BB, he has that orange eyebrow as well. Can you look at dad and see any orange over the eye? Is he is split to BB.

Re: I found a split BB looking feather!
no orange over the eye, but one of his cheek patches has a point to it.. hard to explain. like a normal cheek patch goes strait and then is round and goes down and around to make kind of a rounded triangle sort of? if you know what i mean,
Lux's one cheek patch goes strait under the eye like normal and then at the end where the cheek patch starts to go down, it is pointed and then continues down.
he does have a tiny orange feather right behind his eye on one side but not on the brow i will try to get a picture asap
