A potential society finch pairing?

Post by Albinosilver » Sun Apr 22, 2012 7:38 pm

So a friend of mine got me a lovely pair of societies for my birthday today. The male is a chocolate pied crested. And the female is a fawn self. Would they be a good breeding pair? And what would the offspring be like?

The color dominance scale for Societies is Chocolate is dominant to Chestnut which is dominant to Fawn. If your Chocolate Male is split to Chestnut, you can get Chocolate and Chestnut babies. If he is split to Fawn, you can get Chocolate and Fawn babies. Chocolate and any Chestnut young will be split to Fawn. You will get both crested and non-crested young.

The combination of pied and self will work just fine, however it is not ideal from a color standpoint. Self birds were developed by breeders who worked with pieds for a long time to breed out all white markings. So, the self will act to suppress the pied (white markings) and the pied will "undo" some of the self.

You will get lightly pied babies - with fewer white markings than the father and/or self birds carrying small white "imperfections".

All that said, the babies will undoubtedly be very cute - as all Societies are IMO. :D What a lovely present!
