Society Finch -- What color is this bird?
This chick came from one of my fist clutches this season. Mother is fawn pied and the father is crested Chocolate Pied. I have never had a chick that looks like this before. Can anyone tell me what color it is? It's hard to see in the pic, but there is a hint of grey to the head wings and rump. The other birds in the clutch are 3 crested Chocolate pied and one fawn pied.
Thanks for the help!

Pretty...I agree with Lori, maybe Red Brown. My Chestnuts are browner than this guy, but then again I am a newbie

Ivan is an amazing society finch breeder. His website is the one I linked to in the above message.

It's a Chestnut, not a red brown

Re: Society Finch -- What color is this bird?
Keep in mind that the definition of the various color mutations varies by country/region. What we call fawn can be called a dilute or tan/beige etc. Chestnut can be light brown, red brown, etc. Fawn can mean a chestnut color too, depending on who is using the terms. It gets confusing. I try to stay with the terms used by expert finch breeders, such as on efinch or other reliable websites, like avianweb, finchsociety.com etc.

Well, they're in the US, so... as far as US is concerned, it's still a Chestnut Pied.

Re: Society Finch -- What color is this bird?
I would call it chestnut pied, but keep in mind that a)chestnut encompasses a pretty wide range of shades of brown, and b) its color will change a bit when it molts into adult feathers.
Either way, it's a cutie!

Well, I've been wanting a chestnut, and I asked Kane, and he is going to sell it to me!

Re: Society Finch -- What color is this bird?
She is mine now.
I named her Carmel, for her soft brown color. We are just guessing that she is a girl, since she hasn't sung yet. I do think that she has molted, because she was looking a little patchy there for a while, and I saw extra loose feathers around the cage.
Here are some photos of her with a couple of others that I had in quarantine together: Speaking of color variances, that self society on the left was sold to me (by a different person) as a "dilute". But to me it looks like the same color as Carmel. Could it actually be a chestnut, or would it be diluted from chocolate, making it only look like chestnut?
