Half-sider Zebra (NG cock& CFW cock)

Post by dovan » Mon Jun 23, 2014 2:54 am

He is about 3 months, his father is a Fawn/CFW cock (NG visual), mother is a CFW hen. I wonder if the color edge will be sharper after one or more mouting?

We see this in gouldians, budgies and parrotlets from time to time. The parrotlets I see in person are very interesting...it is like the colors are reversed on one side!

What a cutie pie! Gorgeous bird.
I've never seen coloring quite like his!

On the third pic down, is that over-exposed or is he really super white on his left side?

Congrats, Very cool bird! Love his coloring, it's almost grizzled in some places! I know halfsiders that are Gynandromorphs (showing male/female sides) are mostly, if not always infertile. Will be interesting to see if this guy Is fertile, and if so, what color chicks he'll produce!

Wait a minute....

Is a halfsider a chimera???
Like two fraternal twins fused to make one individual?

I always thought a halfsider was just two different colorations. But based on what
@Chris103 mentioned, it sounds like it's more than just coloration if there can be male/female halves - a true chimera???

I know they exist so Chris is right about that, but this specimen does show cheeks on both sides. Almost a NG pied on one side and Fawn pied on the other. But I'd say it is a male bird and not a true chimera/joined twins/male and female together.

A chimera doesn't have to be male/female. It is just the combination of two different zygotes (fertilized cells). In this case it happened to be two males. But the two distinctly different sides make it probable it is a true chimera. Neat looking bird!!

Aspen -- Yes!
And the cheek color is different on the light colored side.

Wow, that is an amazing zebra! I really like the mottling look to the feathers on the side. Gynandromorph and chimera, both things I've never seen in a zebra before. Very cool! Let us know what ends up happening later on down the road when it contributes to a clutch. I would love to see how it goes!

Hi dovan :)

I'm very excited for you!!! XD
Yes, the bird resembles a half-sider but what is even more so fascinating is the fact
The bird also resembles something similar to my grizzle zebra finches!!!
( to my understanding the grizzle mutation is only available in Australia!!! )
My main query is whether or not this cock bird is two toned in its feathering I.e - does the bird have grey and white in the same feather???
If it is, it is by no means a show quality grizzle, but you would most certainly be onto something!!! ( again sooooo excited for you!!! )
Please post some more photos!

SOOOOO EXCITED!!! XD
