gouldian colors??? So confused...

Post by adiekaty » Fri Feb 12, 2010 4:23 pm

Hello,

Tried to read all the genetics info about coloring and sexing...
I am now more confused as ever.

the lady I bought my gouldian juvies from said...
the parents are normal red and black headed... she said if its red... its a male, if its black... its a female.
(I think) okay... fast forward 6 months... Most are singing.. (trying) so I assume MALES... ok... the colors are really comin in now... and I have purple breasted and white breasted.. so I am again confused. Guess I thought all would be PB ... Not complaining... just wish i could figure this out.

Since some are red heads and some are black heads... I really can't go by the coloring? it seems now she told me wrong...
Can someone solve my mystery?

i think I have 4 males and 2 females... by how they chatter. (or don't)

Were both or either parent(s) purple breasted? Could you post pics of the babies?

I believe if the male parent has a black head and the female parent has a red head then all female offspring will have a black head and all male offspring will have a red head.

The parents could have both been split to white breast if both are visually purple but you have white breasted offspring.

update... talked with the lady I bought the Goulds from..
the parents of my babies are both purple breasted. (hen is lighter) don't think she is lilac though.

red head male, black head female, says both are split to white breast and female is split to blue back.

So my males will be black and red headed... still so confused..

thanks,
adrienne

Gould genetics ARE really confusing at first  . It takes a bit of research to understand it.

Adrienne,
Tiffany can explain sooo much better then me but here goes.
The hens will have a duller color then the males so she should have a lighter chest color then the male, they are both purple breasted though.
If your male is red head and hen black head you will get ALL red headed chicks, all the males will be red head split to black head and all the hens will be red head.
Seeing that both your parents are split to white breast you could get white breasted chicks.
Some fo your chicks will be split to blue but there is no way of telling with out test breeding them.
Good luck with them

Try this link to the Gouldian Genetic Forecaster by Carlos Matos. Its the latest version. You will need to email him with a request for an access code but he replies quickly.

I have found it invaluable, it makes understanding the genetics so much easier for me.

If the cock is /BH she will also get BH cocks, too, though.
