Re: Pastel and Silver gouldians
Interesting. I would have thought a SF pastel/silver but the purple breast is stumping me. I would assume SF silvers are also possible, and if he was a DF silver he wouldn't have the blue ring around his neck? That's my guess anyway

Renee,
Misty posted 3 photo's of a bird like this one, on page 1...only she didn't say what he was..
Misty?
What are these birds? The blue band is what is throwing me too...
visually silver, deep purple chest, white band which goes into pretty blue on the heads/chins

Re: Pastel and Silver gouldians
Yeah I was just looking. I'm going to stick with SF Silver, DF wouldn't have the blue ring, it would be white. I think what's is so confusing and even stumped a lot of the long time breeders on another group was what to call these pastels with white breasts that have the white feathers. They look visually silver but only because they are wb. That's very confusing. I am going to assume like the yellows. There are SF and DF silvers, they can be purple and wb. The pastels are visually blue only when they have a PB. So I guess they are 3 different type of silver looking birds. Sf and DF silvers and Wb pastels that look silver.
Ok, scratch what I wrote above. I'm really confused now and out of my realm, lol! I was just checking Tiffany's site and according to her info. There is no mention of a SF silver male. Only pastel blues are SF and Silver hens. WB pastels will appear silver. I have no clue why there are PB Silver's with blue rings. I'm assuming their is just variations in colors, like some have more hints of blue on their backs, etc. . Someone else will need to come in to explain/confirm.

Some very beautiful birds posted above, but afraid I'm with your friend's on their side of the fence. Normals are the most beautiful and striking!
All Gouldians are beautiful based on their clear colour definition and smooth plumage. I find them very royal looking and elegant and each colour combo grows on you and you can like them individually, but when you compare them... you will have to do some convincing on Silvers/Pastels beating normals.

Re: Pastel and Silver gouldians
I have always looked at the chin color rather then the blue ring because it is my understanding that all SF and DF have a blue ring just at different degrees. You can browse through the Erythrura site at the SF and DF and see the blue ring in each.
Normals are at: http://users.skynet.be/fa398872/engoulrh.htm
Yellows at: http://users.skynet.be/fa398872/navfram.en.htm
And YellowBlues (aka "silver") at: http://users.skynet.be/fa398872/navfram.en.htm though there are not a lot of pictures.

Re: Pastel and Silver gouldians
When determining the mutation you have to take into account the breast color of the bird. Since your bird has a purple breast with a silver back then he has to be a double factor. If he was a single factor with a purple breast then he would be your typical blue pastel, with blue shading to the back. Only the double factor of yellow (pastel) would cause the body of the bird to be void of blue coloring. A single factor of yellow (pastel) would not be enough to mute the blue on a purple breasted blue back cock. When you have lighter breast colors of lilac or white then a single factor of yellow (pastel) will be enough to lighten the body to silver even if they obtain only a single factor. You really can not go by the blue ring aroung the head, as you stated Debbie, the chin/bibb is a better indicator. Though it is always beast to go by the breast color as this will tell you if the melanins (dark colors) are repressed to start with. Carol, that is a beautiful DF purple breasted silver boy you have there

Re: Pastel and Silver gouldians
I hope HoangQuan doesn't mind, but I find his pastel to be an extremely beautiful bird.

I have to agree though, that normals are by far my favorite with blues in second.
