Re: Getting crazy Gouldian babies :-O
I know everyone is still talking about the female, but base on the pictures of her I saw, she's definitely a black headed one.
Is there any possibility that the male is actually a red headed one but he stucked in the molt somehow that you think he's a black headed?

if the male was red headed i think all the babies should have been red headed as well, but only my male babies are red headed and the females are black headed so, i'm pretty sure that my male is black headed, but i'll post a picture of him so you can check it out. also, this pair just hatched me 5 little beauties
so far looks like 3 normals and 2 yellows. and they're all doing great! i may post some pictures once the babies start getting feathers to see if you experts can tell me if i got any dilutes this go around. this pair seems to only want to give their yellow genes to the female babies

thank you very much, debbie!
i saw a black headed dilute at a bird fair a few years ago, but didn't have the money to get him at the time. i knew i had to have one, though, so lucky me the next bird fair came right around my birthday!

Since the male is dilute(single factor yellow), he only carries one yellow gene, so of course only the female chicks can be yellow (zW), the male chicks will need 2 yellow genes to express the yellow(zz) or one yellow gene but with white white breast. The chance for dilute to appear is 1/4, so maybe you're not lucky yetthis pair seems to only want to give their yellow genes to the female babies

I'm quite surprise that your dilute male looks so green and beautiful. My dilute turns out to be a very pale green one.

Re: Getting crazy Gouldian babies :-O
well here we are, the first pic of this pair's newest clutch. sorry bout the quality, camera phone again
anyway, this go round the parents are doing a super job. i previously had a problem with them not feeding. but as you can see, all the babies are fat and happy! and i'm extra excited that my 2 little yellow babies are doing so well. in their previous clutches the yellows were the first to go, unfortunatly
but they're a week old now and so far so good. now i'm hoping that one of my little normal looking ones turns out to be a beautiful dilute boy
but i guess i have to wait until some feathers start coming in

Cute! (ok only finch lovers would ever comment on little pinkie ugly chicklings being cute)
Congrats. It will be interesting to see what they eventually colour out to be.

Very healthy, well-fed chicks!k I'm hoping you get a dilute -- I think the dilutes are stunning!
Monique, I laughed when you said that we are the only ones that think baby finches are cute, too!
My son thinks they are so ugly he's embarassed for them. He begs me not to show them to people until they have feathers!

Re: Getting crazy Gouldian babies :-O
so the handful of babies pictured are all grown up now and FINALLY starting to color up. when i asked for an opinion about this pair's first clutch the general consensus seemed to be that the female was just a very dirty orange headed bird. so i expected this clutches males to also be red headed. seems like this pair likes throwing curve balls. despite looking forward to having a beautiful red headed dilute, looks like my little guy is getting black (well, gray) feathers
i think i may have to throw in the towel on figuring out this pair's genetics

Re: Getting crazy Gouldian babies :-O
so did i stump the forum or what?
i figured if i showed you guys pictures you'd wake up! everyone loves pictures! the top pic is the dilute baby in question. pretty sure those are gray feathers, not red. and the bottom pic is the dilute with his dad and his brother (whom i suspect is from a different daddy
)

Re: Getting crazy Gouldian babies :-O
personally i've never had a problem with peaking. and i'm one of those people who just can't help but peaking at least once a day
but not all birds are going to be as forgiving. you shouldn't have a problem if you're just going to band them and then put them right back. just keep an eye after and make sure you see the parents go back into the nest.
