Tiffany beautiful birds! I agree the hen is very pretty!!

Candace, thanks for the info! I hope I can actually get my hands on some gouldians :? I usually see normals. The big gouldian breeder here (friends of my uncle) got hit with some virus brought in from a bird. Her flock is sick and even the avian vets cannot figure it out. Looks like I am stuck with normals for now! (not saying normals are bad, I love all gouldians)

So would SF mean single Factor? ANd DF Double? What would these birds look like then? Should I get a BH WB GB and breed it to WB YB? Or a YB that is split to WB??

Dante

BH-WB-GB m + BH-WB-YB f =
BH-WB-YBSF m or
BH-WB-GB f

BH-WB-GB m + BH-PB/WB-YB f =
BH-WB-YBSF or BH-PB/WB-YBSF(dilute) m or
BH-WB-GB or BH-PB/WB-GB f

What you breed together depends on what you want out of the chicks.
In both cases the BH-WB-YBSF will be a male.
The 2nd option could get you a dilute male.

Play with the genetic forecaster:

Having said that, sometimes it is VERY difficult to get the specific color bird that you want to breed. That is when you have to settle for splits rather than pure, and getting the offspring color you want may take longer.

BTW, you do know that it will take a LONG time for the gouldians to molt into their adult colors. From hatching to end of molt into adult colors is a LONG time, up to 9 months.

Q
With the different combinations of 2nd generation offspring, what gets complicated is when you go to the 3rd generation. The combinations of possible father and mother to try is boggling to the mind. But to really plan your breeding, you have to do that.

In my case, I breed for specific color off-spring (RH-WB-YB or BH-WB-BB). That makes it easier, as I ignore anything that does not go towards that direction. Although that does takes away the fun and surprise of having a clutch of mixed colors.

If your looking for the grey headed yellow body goulds, like Tiffany said you want a SFYb WB or LB MALE. DF and hens will all have the white colored heads.

If you can't find a black head sf yellow male and you want that specific mutation of bh, wb, sfy then your best option would be to go with the first option Gary pointed out:

BH, WB, GB male and BH, WB, YB female. If you can't find that you might have to settle for splits and work your way towards what you want.

Go for one of these pairs and you will either get what you want or eventually get what you want from the splits.
Owls, Goulds, European Goldfinch, Red Belly Siskins and Zebs... For now...
