Re: Gouldian ID help needed
Sorry, I don't see any adult color on the head yet, though I do see some pin feathers.

If you go to the link and scroll down to "Body Color Mutations and Their Affect on Head Color" the first picture is what your birds head will look like if he is a SF Pastel (BH SF Pastel Green). Her birds are still molting by the looks of it so the white areas will fill in gray in time.

Re: Gouldian ID help needed
All BH and RH will have red tipped beaks except for the BH YTB. The YH will have a yellow tipped beak.WesKnapp wrote: how do the beak tip colors Come in to play with head color, or do they?
I have the black and red head down, but the yellow head confuses the you-know-what out of me. and why don't we all call it orange head? ;)
There are times when a RH looks more of a tangerine color and people think it is a YH. Sure fire way to know is by what color the beak tip is.
Genetics say YH and believe it or not there are YH's out there that are as yellow as a lemon.

Re: Gouldian ID help needed
Thanks! I read the link and kinda get it and kinda confused where it says birds can carry all 3 genes at once.
Both possible fathers in the cage had red tipped beaks. one was red head (I think split black) and the other was black headed (split YH?). for the beak to be yellow tipped do both the male and female need to carry the YH?

^ Yes, those color shades match what I'm seeing in person (might not be translating well with my phone camera and room lighting. Thanks for the reference!!!

Just to follow up....they are ALMOST done with their juvenile molt in this picture, but the baby in question at the beginning of this thread is the gray headed dilute on the right.

Debbie,
Yes it is a black (gen yellow) lavender breast, green split to blue.
Both parents had a black head - but guess had some yellow hidden.

Both parents had to be split to YH or one or more was BH YTB. BH YTB are genetically YH but can't express it because they have no red gene.
The Lilac Breast is a very pretty shade.

Re: Gouldian ID help needed
thanks!
about the parents...the cock has a black face/white breast/green (with a red tipped beak). The hen is a black head/lilac-white breast/blue.
are there other beak tip colors that can hint at hidden genetic things like the YTB?
