Crested Societies

Oops - I posted this in another section but just realized This is where is Where it should be...

I have 4 new society finches: 2 crested and 2 chocolate (with tiny spots of white - does that make them pied?). So far it's clear I have a male of each type, but unsure of the other 2. No eggs... so it's just a waiting game :(

But I have a question about genetics... I understand it's Not good to breed with 2 crested parents. But I'm curious - what are the results (no I'm not going to test it if it's a bad thing .. ;-)
- Bald chicks?
- mortality?
- sterile offspring?
Until I know better they're in 2 cages with a crested and a chocolate in each.

Thanks!

I have only crested finches and they have bred many times. I have never had a bald finch. They have all been perfectly healthy.

I have also heard not to breed them together, but....... no problems here.

Thanks!

It's good to hear that yours have been just fine!

As it turns out, both my crested are males - so I'm Really pleased about that. The chocolate girls are both showing interest in the nests I've provided, but haven't yet coaxed the boys into playing house.

Can't believe I'm this impatient! :)
