Blue Head generations

Post by CandoAviary » Mon Feb 28, 2011 11:53 pm

My first Blue Head was born in 2008 and was a BH dilute. As he matured his head became more and more blue. He produced 3 chicks before passing much too young at 2 years old. His chicks are coloring up and there are 2 nomal males and a beautiful BH yellow hen that I hope will pass on the blue head trait. Here is Blue Boy
Image

Blue Boys sister produced some beautiful BH Dilutes last year and 3 have developed nice blue color to their heads. One is with eggs and the other 2 are just now courting. Here is the one showing good color and is just over a year old, just like his uncle :D

This was him at 6 months, the blue gets darker and spreads with age.

I am thrilled to see this gene past onto another generation and will be awaiting the chicks from the current nest.

Gorgeous!!! I love it ;) I noticed my BH SF yellow male has a very thick blue band. I think it's so striking next to the yellow and the gray head. I wish you were closer so I can incorporate more of it.

Renee,
I have a yellow hen that has a good bit of blue on her collar and a darker yellow/green body. She may be what they show in books as a dilute hen...my first. ? I had put her in the hen fledgling flight to color out and for a moment I thought she was a sf yellow male. But her mask wasn't full and actually speckled orange. Her beak is very blue with a yellow tip. I tried to take pictures to show her blue but they came out a drab grey color, the flash washed her out too much... Anyway, I wish you were closer because I would love to introduce some blue heads to your yellow fellow :D
Here is an awful picture of my hen. I have decided to pair her with this df yellow that she has been answering to from across the room

Very pretty :)

I'm finding that all my BH Dilutes and several yellow males have this blue on their head - but not as intense as the aqua blue you have on these two boys

Yay!!

I was excited to see this post, remembering the first ones with your beautiful male that passed. I love Blue Boy! He is exquisite! He looks very calm in your hand, I can tell your birds are very comfortable with you even holding them.

Maybe this will be the start of a Blue Headed Gouldian mutation? A "Candace" Gouldian!

I just noticed that my BH SF yellow male is getting more blue on the top of his head. Just took some pics yesterday and can see it, I've never noticed this before. I wonder if it's just a common accurance in the gray heads???

Can you guys see it? I was taking pics of the babies and only noticed it when I uploaded the pics.
Image

Like Misty said, it's not as pronounced as Candace's birds but never noticed it before.

Tried to get a few clearer shots. It's funny I never noticed before.

Very pretty!! I have found when using a flash they always look bluish on the head, It is the way the light is reflected. In the photo it also looks like they have blue breast. The greys, especially the light headed greys (much like white) will reflect to our eyes, blue.
I took some pictures of some other BH dilutes that I have and they have no blue on the heads... some really dark charcoal, some medium charcoal, some light grey, and then the one line I have has blue on the head and cheeks. I take the picture without the flash to try and show what you see with the naked eye. When I use a flash it looks misrepresented and totally blue and glowing at that :D I will try and post the different color head pictures later... I love them all :D

The room has so much natural sunlight, I have a hard time with overexposed pictures and not getting their accurate colors. But I can see the blue in person as well. It's just strange that I only noticed it now.

That is what amazes me about the blue coming out later. Most people say they will molt out of it, but I have found that they don't really have much when they first color out and with each molt they get more. Also it seems to intensify when they are in prime condition for breeding.
That male is a gorgeous bird. I didn't mean to discredit that he had blue on his head. I was just referring to the blue all over those pictures. I know what you mean about seeing it in person. The blue heads are the hardest for me to carpture on film. The picture of the one outdoors in the sunlight (first photo of this link) is the best representation. Other pictures in incandescent light, flourescent light, natural light filter throuh the window don't really capture what I see naturally. In the shade is really good for the actual color but not for the sheen that these birds seem to have.

Different shades of grey...and then blue
These 2 boys are very deep charcol grey

Image

Image

This fellow has a medium grey

Image

compare the medium grey, dark charcoal grey and the black head colors

Image

Image

This fellow has a very light grey (compare to the 2 hens black head color)
Image

And another light grey (my first BH lilac breast :D )

Image

And then the greys that are covered with blue. these look very different from all the other BH dilute I breed..no matter what breast color. It is just this one line that I get a true blue covering. On the others I will get some blue cast on the head, especially in the yellows, and especially if I use a flash.

The grey blue head

When you look at these greys side by side you can really see the difference. I have been concentrating on breeding black headed dilutes in an array of shades. Combinations with lilac and white breast to see if I can figure out what triggers this blue. So far only one line has passed it on. So I have a lot of BH dilutes right now :D Can't wait to breed the next generation next year
