Blue bar/breast Gouldians

I posted a pic elsware of my Blue bar that has cropped up in a line of white breast. I thought I would share the brother pictures also.
Here is American Pie, he tossed his one youngster from the first clutch but was adopted by a yellow pair of gouldians that are raising him along with their own new hatchlings :D American Pie and his hen, Martha, are on 5 eggs and acting more serious this time. His first attempt was 2 eggs, one infertile and the one tossed, but saved.

His brother, Uncle Sam
Uncle Sam's bar is not as dark and full as American Pie but his back is the most beautiful seagreen color with blue throughout, the pictures don't do the color justice. Maybe after breeding I will get some in natural sunlight in the outdoor aviary. He has had 3 chicks fledge and is on more eggs now :D

Neat looking birds. Do they molt out with the blue bar every time? You sure can see the blue sheen on the back of Uncle Sam.
good luck with the new clutches

When they colored up as youngsters only the light bar showed up. I actually sold American Pie to a fellow breeder and last Oct. he asked if he could trade him back to me for a yellow/blue or towards a blue. I said sure and he brought him to me at the Pensacola fair where I was a vendor.... I could not believe my eyes.... he had a blue bar... this was not there when he left the aviary fully colored up at a year. He was white breasted as snow! If he had had the blue he would of never been sold. I thought just his brother from the following clutch had gotten the blue. (now I'm wondering about the other white breast I sold  ) He molted that summer with him and here he was a blue breast. I think he thought it was a fault...probably is but you know I love the odd balls.... It has gotten darker since October especially as he came into breeding condition.
He will molt this summer and I shall see if he retains the blue bar... hopefully gain more blue :D I'll keep you posted.
The pair that threw these were from this post...basically a purchase of older birds due to the couple getting military orders to go overseas.... Thought I was doing them a favor and helping out and turns out, I'm the one blessed with something that sparks my curiosity. The RH PB/WB Daddy past away this past winter and the Mom is looking her age. Doubt I will breed her anymore... retired to the old bird aviary :D
Here are the parents...I didn't even know they were split to white breast. Thought just normal RH PB GBs.

Don't think I've ever seen a blue bar before, it looks pretty cool! That sure was lucky of you to get him back. I love seeing pictures of the odd balls.
Best of luck with them.

Hi Paul, yes I have seen dirty white breast from mottled blue to purple and even black melanistic dirty birds that always molted out once the bird got it's adult plumage or when the diet/lighting was improved. However this is thought to be an actual start of a genetic mutation. It differs visually from the the unpatterned 'dirty whitebreast' to an area where the color is always in the same location and permanent. The color does not start and fade, It retains/strengthens with the molt and maturity. I know of many that look like yours that always molt into white breast. Did yours retain the blue dirty breast or did it molt out white?
There is no name yet given to this color by the experts... I simply call them blue bars for my own references.
I don't know if you have access to this book or follow these gouldian breeders
http://www.amazon.com/dp/0975081713?tag ... T1JVNBE5Z&
but I copied this from another of my post.

"For those gouldian breeders who have the book 'A Guide to Gouldian Finches and Their Mutations' by Dr. Rob Marshall, Dr. Milton Lewis, Ron Tistram, and Dr. Terry Martin, there is a picture of the blue breast mutation on page 97 that looks just like my 2 boys. It explains the genetic make up of this mutation.
For those that don't have the book the blue color is the result of phaeomelanin(reddish/brown) into eumelanin (black) of the breast area.
So for blue breast you need at least 2 mutations . one gene to convert into eumelanin and another gene to prevent it from being expressed. There could be more at play and they recommend anyone working on this mutation to use white breasted birds."

I don't know if these pictures from this book is anywhere on the web, I will search and if I can find them I will link. I can't scan and post the picture because it is copied righted.

Speaking of the book - look at page 109 - the Dilute back hen? I think I have this color - the hen that is nesting with Bumble Bee is this color? You mentioned this in your other post - but that hen looks yellow to me? Is she like the book picture in person?

Don't have the book but I think I'll be buying it soon now. :)
When you guys say the "dilute hen" are you talking about the dilute from Australia or just a hen that has that shade of color?
