what happened? yellow male + blue female = greenback chick?

I have a yellow back red headed white breasted male

and a blue back white breasted black headed female

how in the world did I end up with one of the chicks being a greenback?

I tried to make sense of it on a genetic calculator, but it looks like the male could be any of about 8 combinations of genes.

I didnt think it was so complicated.

Can anyone shed some light on how this came about.

I thought, yellow and blue were both recessive so there was no way I could get a greenback

Are you sure your RH.WB.Yb isn't a single factor Yellow? Because he is WB he is visually Yellow but if he was a PB he would be visually a green bodied bird AKA "dilute"

That was my thought also, a single factor yellow male,
though the green will be a split to blue :D

Yup - your male must be SF Yellow assuming you're cage breeding, not colony breeding, and the hen didn't have access to other males before she was paired up with this guy.

Your normal will be a female :)

Can't a male also be normal split to blue??

Woops, yeah, for some reason I thought the female (mother) was silver :)

Well I'm gonna throw a silly comment in here, since I don't know anything about gouldian colours.

I mean clearly when you mix blue and yellow together, you must get green :D

That's exactly why you get yellows and blues and silvers!

A normal gouldian has structural blue and carotene (yellow/red) based colors resulting in "green" body.
Structural Blue + Yellow = Green

The yellow mutation inhibits structural blue, so
Yellow - Structural Blue = Yellow

The blue mutation inhibits carotenoids, so
Structural blue - Yellow = Blue

And Silver is a combination of yellow and blue mutations, so they inherently play a tug of war with one another:
No Structural Blue + No Yellow = NO COLOR

:D

That's the easiest explanation that I actually understood so far, LOL!!
