Are these Pied Zebras?

Post by Canadiannee » Thu Jun 23, 2011 3:22 pm

Hi,

I'm brand new to your forum, and before I post my question, I just want to take a moment to say that this is probably the most delightful forum I have ever had the opportunity to read... I am extremely amazed with the generousity, support and friendly advice coming from such an incredible diverse group of individuals... and gosh, NO drama! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

I use to breed zebras, societies and canaries over 30 years ago (and then went into horses) and although I've kept a few Zebras over the years, I can see alot has changed! Mainly all these mutations! :D

I'm not up-to-date on mutations and genetics of Zebra Finches and therefore when these three were dropped into my care a couple weeks ago, I went searching for "information"...

I'm assuming they're all pied females... but would certainly appreciate confirmation or correction...

Thank you kindly...

I am pretty new to zebras - just started with them at Christmastime- so I'm not 100% sure but they do look like pieds to me. The one in the middle *might* be a penguin, but I don't think so. I am sure someone else will come along soon to help you better.
Welcome to the forum, though! Your hens are very pretty! Are you planning to get males for them?

Yes, you have two pied zebras!

In regards to penguins, once you introduce the pied factor it chnges the look of the penguin. The pied cancels the orange color in the males's cheeks to white.

Hi Again...

And of course, thank you so much for the warm welcome! (and the compliments on this trio!)

To be honest, I almost wasn't going to post pictures of these three birds because I had read somewhere online that "some" breeders consider Pieds to be like a "plague"... but then I found this forum, and I didn't get THAT impression from any of you... You all seem so supportive and respectful of each other that my initial "shyness" faded away.

At this time of writing, I have no idea what I am going to do with these girls... I do have an assortment of males (greys, fawns, whites and crested) that I could pair them up with, but I'm not sure which route I want to go yet... If anyone has any suggestions for pairing, I'd love to hear them... I mean it's my understanding that Zebra's are like a crap shoot... you never know the roll of the dice until they fall!

Sincerely,
~A

Nice Zebbies!

Most of my Zebras are pied, and I love every one of them! Each one is so different. It's amazing the different variations of color they have.

They're just so darn cute!

A.- I have a saddleback boy that I haven't paired up yet.... but I really need to cuz he's driving me and the other birds nuts! I don't know what to pare him to either so we're in the same boat. I'm thinking of just getting a normal hen and see what happens. The nice thing is all babies are beautiful no matter what they come out looking like. =D> =D> :D
