Grey vs Pied male zebra

Hi. You have all helped me alot and I ran into a situation that now has me confused. My girlfriend came over and said that my "pied" male is actually a gray male. I googled images and my male looks like a gray.

So right now I looked at my babies. Have 4. Definately 2 gray but one has white on the bottom of the main wing. Does that make him a pied?

Also, can a CWF female be split to pied? Still trying to learn. I am still trying to learn to upload pics so I'm just looking for guesses right now. I will get you pics when babies are older, promis.

There are varying degrees of pied. Some zebras will show only the tiniest bit of white, while others will be completely white. So your male may be pied, but just not very pied. When you can post pictures, I'm sure someone will be able to tell you with more certainty.
If it is the male shown with your CFW hen in this post, then he is definitely pied. http://www.finchforum.com/viewtopic.php ... 7&start=15
If he were normal grey, there would be no white in his wings, head, face, and breast.
I have never actually seen pied babies myself, but it sounds like the baby with the white is likely pied!

Thank you! It is the pics I uploaded. Does that mean tht the female is split to pied and I know the male is pied.

I am not really understanding some of the genetics. Is the female CFW a sex linked gene and only the males could be CSW/pied.

So all of the babies will be split to CFW/pieds?

your male is Normal Grey Pied.
And your female is CFW.

CFW is sex linked.
Only males can be split for sex linked mutation.

Pied is Recessive.
Both of the parents must carrie the mutation so it will show in the young.

So it sounds like your hen is split for pied.

So does that mean if I have any CFW's they will all be male?

No, CFW is an akward one.

A CFW cock will produce CFW hens, NG cocks.
But
A CFW hen will only produce NG split CFW cocks, NG hens.

Hens can't be split cfw, cocks can.

So if you get ant CFW from this pair then your cock must be Split CFW. If so they could be male or female. :)

Flirty,
Oh my. I should have stayed with tiels. Genetics are a snap. One of my babies is a pied. Has a white stripe going all the way down the one wing. another baby has a tiny white spot above the eye. Pied? Maybe I should ask,,, do ng every have any white on them?

Do CFW males have check patches? (figure I might as well as all my questions as I think of them).

One baby (the only with white down the wing has a yellowish color near the tail. What is that all about?

NGs will have a small white patch between the tear drop and the beak. They will have buff color chest and tummy, as well as buff/yellow color above the tail (partially covered by the wing tips).
Your baby with the white above his eye is probably pied too.
CFW males will have orange cheek patches, and chestnut flanking (hence the name chestnut flanked white), but I believe that the vividness of these markings can vary greatly. I've read that more diluted is considered to be of lesser quality, but I think this mostly matters for showing. Someone please correct me if I am wrong on that.
Can't wait to see pictures of your chickies!!

That is all correct, white above the eye sounds like pied but a picture will confirm it.
As for showing, unless you want to show, don't worry about the so called 'quality of color', the colors in all mutations can vary so much and that is one thing i love about them. All birds are beautiful and some of my favourite birds are the ones that show a variation to strict 'show quailty' individual and i personally find it hard to believe that these birds would be disregarded.

Oh, I can't believe how patient everyone has been! I can't thank you enough. I printed out the genetics lessons here and will take pics. Can you handle the babies to take out of nest since they are crammed in? Wouldn't want to upset the parents. If I take a pic of babies in nest, then you only see their heads which for the most part are grey.

Until you know how tolerant the parents are of you, I wouldn't risk trying to take them out of the nest. Some parents, if disturbed, will abandon chicks in the nest.
So.... We can wait for pictures

I (almost) always wait for the chicks to go out of the nest,
to take a photo of them, so I dont disturb the parents,
expecially if the parents are first time parents.

Just when I posted my question, I looked in the cage. One of the babies is out of the nest and huddled in a corner screaming for food. I'm not sure if it was ok, but I lucked out. I picked up the little one and put back in nest. Parents are so overprotective, it's insane. They are taking care of the four now and I'm just having such fun with all this. Love the learning, caring for, and most of all the patience of you all for the help you are all giving me. Thank you! Lyn =D>
