What babies will I get
I recently brought a pair of zebras at the pet store about a week Ago and was wondering what offspring they would produce. The cock is a orange breasted fawn and the hen is a Charcoal. I'm unsure if they are split to any other colours. Any input would be good, thanks.

hi
i am afraid you never know what you are going to get when you buy them from a source where they dont know the parentage, the colours you describe sonds like a fawn and a normal,if they are not split for anything you will end up with chicks which resemble thier parents unless of course there is another colour hidden in any of the parents you could end up with any colours

Re: What babies will I get
Unless I am mistaken I think Charcoal is recessive so you will not get that colour unless the male is split for it. But I'm not familiar with that mutation so...
But if the male is fawn you will get fawn hens
Orange breasted is also recessive, so you need a split there too.
But as said, if you don't know the parentage of these birds there is no telling what you will get ;) And that's the fun part!

I do have a good feeling though that they are splits. Because when I was in the pet store there was other zebras in the same cage that was a charcoal with an orange Breast. So fingers crossed I could get something mixed.

Re: What babies will I get
you can put what they look like into this chart and see roughly based on their visual traits what you may get....I agree without the background you might just get something different than the outcome on the calculator. That is some of the fun of zebras!!! They are little surprises!

The male looks Phao
http://www.efinch.com/species/ffzeb.htm
or and orange breasted or a orange breasted/black breasted
http://www.efinch.com/species/obzeb.htm
or a combo.....Vargur and Kenny can help with what the mutation is/are and what you may get. The female looks normal.

The female is not Charcoal.
She is Normal grey black face.
(Black faced females are not real black faced, like the males,
their faces are normaly grey
(Same head color)
And her lover abdomen is buff colored just like Normal grey have.
Charcoal is different.
If she would be charcoal, then she would
have black or dark grey vent ( lower abdomen )
and under tail coverts black.
And A real black face.

here is one of mine BF (black faced) females.
And the male looks like a Fawn OB.
really nice pair!!

Re: What babies will I get
Thanks for clearing that up.
I wasn't exactly 100% sure what they were, I just took a rough guess, mostly for the female anyway. So if the female is split to orange breast and the male is split to black face will that mean their offspring will have babies like them??? And what if their not split to anything????

Vargur...the black face is the absence of the white between the tear and beak? Still learning here!!!!

@ Finchman: Well, Black face (BF) is Dominant,
so only one of the parent need to be BF so it will show in the offsprings.
If the female is split for OB, then they could get OB offsprings,
But its really hard to guess what the outcome would be.
The male could be split for something else and the female is maybe split for the same thing... etc...
@ Cindy: yes, your right ;)
BF is one of my FAV mutations,
because the birds body becomes very dark

Here you can see the difference.
Fawn LB male and BB BF female.

hi
i think the female is leaning towards normal, but the male looks as if it is split for something, the white patches on the face convinces me that there is pied hidden in there somewhere.as to the outcome you could get anything possibly normal ,or pied males its hard to tell!i would take a punt and breed them and see what colours come out

I'm still unsure if she's a blackface though because they are supposedly nonexistent in Australia

Re: What babies will I get
I believe that is the case with Florida Fancy as well. While he certainly mimics the coloring or our Phaeos, your male probably is a Fawn or Isabel combined with Black Breast and / or Orange Breast. Both are beautiful birds. Keep us up to date on what offspring they producefinchman101 wrote:I'm still unsure if she's a blackface though because they are supposedly nonexistent in Australia
