red face - yellow belly stars

Post by wildbill » Thu Sep 29, 2011 10:02 pm

i've had this mutation for a couple of months now. one hen has built her nest in a bush about 18 off the ground. may or may not have young but the nest is heavily lined with feather. that's a good sign

better look at the mutation side on

I didn't know that was a mutation. ?? I thought the red faced stars had the same body coloring as the yellow faced stars?? I have two juveniles from a yellow face hen and an orange face cock. The juvies are a beautiful yellow with very light yellow coloring, like a dilute possibly. Is that a different mutation or are they still too young? The one juvie is five months old and the other is two months old. Just curious.

I have yellow faced hen and orange faced cock. So far, the two chicks look like light yellow all over at five months of age. Will they stay that way?

Here are pics of my Stars. There is one fledgling and one juvenile. The parents are in some pics. Can you see the fledges ear? Looks like the dad may be pecking the fledge on his ear?

I love the star finches though I don't have any myself. I was wondering, what is the normal color of wild ones?

Thanks Deborah! Ponytail Joe had a couple at the small bird fair in my area last month. I was drooling but didn't buy any. Some day I hope... :D
