If the results of the genetic calculator say: 50 percent males, red headed/black headed; and 50 percent females red headed:
does that mean all the offspring will be red-headed in appearance?

Yes, but some will have the recessive gene to produce black heads.
The RH/BH head offsprings when paired with a black head or another bird with /black head can produce Black headed offsprings.

Thanks Candace! I think I got it...... so if I end up with some black headed gouldians it means daddy isn't just a redhead but has a recessive black headed gene too.

RH/BH can only be male, and regardless of the head color they are paired with they will always produce a percentage of BH daughters
The only way they'll produce BH sons is if they are paired to a BH hen.

Even clearer! thanks Tiffany.....seems to explain why my red headed daddy and two different black headed moms have only produced black heads so far and most are female!

What did you put into the calculator to get those results ?
Male 50% RH/BH
Females 50% RH
I assume you had a male RH PB GB and a female BH?
All of these chicks would be RH in appearance.... only when you breed the chicks would you get BH, whether you breed a male RH/BH to a RH hen or a BH hen or an YH hen

Your right, Daddy is a RH, PB, NB (green)
Mom #1 was a BH, PB, NB
They had two clutches with only one female survivor in each clutch which are both identical to the mom.
Mom #2 is a BH, WB (white), Blue Back
has had two clutches.(they are still coloring up but it looks like all will be black headed, purple breasted as well. Clutch#1 had two survivors and both look quite certainly to be the same with one male and one female I believe.
Clutch #2 had three chicks and they are much younger and I can't really tell for sure about their colors but all look like the others did.

oh.... to answer you specifically I put in the calculator: RH, PB, Green back for the male and for the mom i put in BH, PB, Green back getting that result.
so putting it in now with RH/BH instead for the head color I get 25 percent of each which makes more sense.

I got hooked on the gouldians due to all the possibilities....
I would get the chicks and then would look forward to the next year to breed them with others to produce more splits.....
Then pairing those to get totally new colors..... and I am still hooked
Have fun creating your rainbow of gouldians
