Isabel Genetics

Post by aaqua85 » Sat Oct 29, 2011 11:14 am

Hi I have a very pretty Isabel hen. She is currently paired with a Pied normal cock and they seem to throw either pied or isabel. I would like to know what other mutations can I pair her with to complement the isabel?
12 pair zebras(many mutations).
1 lonely Red Cheek Cordon Bleu.
I Pair canaries.
Merlin a flame point siamese cat and Casper a main coon mix.

First make a pair of your Isabel with a normal gray male no pied....you will get Florida silver, florida fancy, Isabel, and if the male gray is split to fawn you can get Fawn Isabels.

Then once your pair gives you young, pair one of the young with another normal.

I have Flordia fancies, Florida silvers. Do these simple matches first, build you stock then branch out using some of the combinations described on efinch.com

Do you mind posting some pictures of them/her? Also, if you go to your control pannel you can edit and add your area and other details, may help with future questions.

Well I cant get a pic uploaded for the life of me. It says its too large no matter how much I crop. How do you guys make it work? I even took pics of the chicks she throws to show. Ugh!a

There is 2 normal pieds, 1 pied isabel, and a very silvery one that im assuming will be isabel.

Here is a link of the closest to her I can find, except my hen is not pied.

Pretty! She looks my Florida Silver hen, I have her paired with a normal grey, you can try a whole range of color variations to get appealing birds.

Pairing the silver female with a normal should give you a wide range within the FF and FS mutations. You may even if using a NG male...no pied get FF males.

This is a wonderful article by Garrie Landry on Florida Fancies

as long as the bird is pure gray or gray split to fawn (lightback)

here are the results fo a Isabel female paired with a NG/fawn

12.5% Silver (SF) Cheeked (SF) /Isabel Fawn Males
12.5% Cheeked (SF) /Isabel Fawn Males
12.5% Cheeked (SF) Fawn /Isabel Females
12.5% Silver (SF) Cheeked (SF) Fawn /Isabel Females
12.5% Silver (SF) Cheeked (SF) /Isabel Males
12.5% Cheeked (SF) /Isabel Males
12.5% Cheeked (SF) /Isabel Females
12.5% Silver (SF) Cheeked (SF) /Isabel Females

Isabel paired with a normal gray male provided each is a single factor
if the male is a double factor then you may get all Florida silver

25% Silver (SF) Cheeked (SF) /Isabel
25% Cheeked (SF) /Isabel
25% Silver (SF) /Isabel
25% Normal/Isabel

My Florida silver male is paired with an Isabel and I get silver Fs , FF males, Isabels

The FF male is paired with a fawn Isabel and I get Silvers, FS males (dilute at times), Isabel, silvers Isabel(this last time they gave me all silver Isabel females), fawn Isabel.

Ok I will pair her up with a normal male as soon as they are done with this batch. I've learned alot from you guys about the florida fancys. Thank you. I did not know about the florida silvers and that explains alot with my hen. Im excited to see what I get when I re-pair her.
I had planned a new pairing for the pied male anyway and bought a adorable fawn pied hen for him last week. This should be fun!

I highly recommend Garrie Landry's book on zebra finch genetics. It was given to me as a gift and helped immensely in understanding various crosses and outcomes. Most of the text info is available for free right on his website ( http://www.zebrafinch.com/NewZebra/Zebra.html ), but the book itself has great diagrams of various mutations and crosses.
