Fusion Confusion!

so i've been reading some old forum posts about gouldians having the red fusion bar. from what i've read it's a trait wild gouldians possess that got bred out of captive birds, so now it's not as common. am i understanding that right?
so i guess what i want to know is, is it really THAT uncommon? and is it a desired trait or not? (i realize unless you show your birds, personal opinion is probably the main factor in that question) also, does anyone really know how the trait is passed? i've only seen males with the red bar, so does it not show in females?
i'm sorry, i realize that was a serious onslaught of questions. i'm just very curious because i've been noticing, now that i've had several clutches of babies, that my dilute male has a red bar on his chest. and his male babies also have it. the female i bred him with didn't have it, and so far i haven't seen it on any of his female offspring. i'd like to know as much as possible about the red fusion bar!! are my red bar gouldians a little "extra special," or would they be considered more "ugly ducklings" in the world of gouldians?

Not sure anyone understands all the genetics just yet, I know a few breeders studying it though. Some say it's autosomal recessive and only visually displayed by males and others think that it is possibly sex-linked dominant.
I hear from more and more people that they have birds with the fusion bar so I would say it's not that uncommon anymore. Personally I like the look.
Wish I could have been of more help

Most all old paintings show the gouldians with the red fusion bar. It is a trait that was captured by many artist painting the wild gouldian. Seems the trait become somewhat cloudy with domestication. Though many new color mutations were acheived with domestic breeding.
Gouldians can see reflected light in the ultraviolet range...we cannot as we have only human eyes. I would imagine the line benefitted the males... they wanted to be picked by the hen and the flashier the better. The red lined cock birds I have always get the hens more excited come breeding time than the ones without... so I would say it is a definate desirable trait for the cocks

I personally think it is a desirable trait as this is how they were naturally created and it adds just another wow to an already beautiful bird.
I don't think that it is that uncommon. So far, I am finding that both parents must be carriers to produce redlines..... though I am only on my second generation od breeding. I have not had it show up on a hen as of yet. So I am not much help on the genetic inheriting factors.... sorry.

also, here's another of his babies that surprisingly turned out to be white chested. i guess dad and mom were both split!? you can see his red bar much better in person. his white chest really shows it off!

Hi!
For me, Fusion line is a bonus!!! Some of my birds have it and I think they are beautiful with it!!!
"Dark", my "dark factor" cock have it and passed it to most of his sons...when he was with a female without trace of it...
This hen, when matched with a Double Yellow WB cock passed it to his sons and I think, with a lot of imagination, to her daughters...the fusion line is not red in the case of hens (my crazy hypothesis!!!) but more dark yellow "beige"...(I know, I'm probably seally!!!

!!! ) The red color comes probably with testosterone hormone...
And I think blue back may have it to but in beige color...

All the pics are just gorgeous! I love your gouldian colors. This is the first post on anything genetic related to gouldians that I've understood. Wow, maybe I will learn the rest eventually.

Yes, I am seeing the bars... I would love to see a picture with you lifting the feathers so you could see the feather with the color going through the center...this seperates the "imagination" from the real thing.

Your pictures are great and it's really difficult to take good photo with one hand and active hens!!!
I don't have anymore the hens on picture before...but I took some new pictures of two yellow sisters...They are the daughters of the OH WB double yellow factor I had lost this summer and their mother in the hen who gave me really bluer green back with fusion red bar(VDM1a)...
