I have seen pied zebras but i want to see some split pieds. where they look almost normal with random white? are there any signs of split if it is a normal looking bird?
sorry i feel really stupid. i want to know as much about the pied gene as possible besides the fact of random white feathers.

Split often show white under the chin and white edges to their wings or they a split without any visual signs at all.

Pieds and split to pieds are discussed on efinch @ http://www.efinch.com/species/piedzeb.htm

quote "Male and Female: Birds that are split for Pied can show varying amounts of white. It will usually show on the primary wing feathers and the chin. Some birds show no white feathers at all."

The little gray female has the white on the wing edges and shoulder. Her other siblings from all 5 clutches in 3 years have had no signs of pied visually but I am sure they carry the gene. Once pied is introduced into the line it is difficult to get rid of. It can also effect the look of certain mutations like the penguin...if a pied is bred with a penguin it removes the orange cheeks from the male offspring....a way to add bac the cheeks is to breed a female penguin that has ied in her genes is to breed her with a normal gray or fawn non pied male.

I used to have a split hen, wish I still had her. Cindy showed good examples. Sometimes you can't tell if the bird is split until you see all the flight feathers, some may be white, sometimes there is no way to tell.

The bird pictured is an female from my first zebras that John sent me over 3 yrs ago...they have never given me another split or pied.

John has pied and he also has fawn cheek....here is a little twist that efinch has written up in regards to Fawn cheek and gray chee

http://www.efinch.com/species/fczeb.htm
"The FC/GC mutation will often have what appears to be pied-like markings in them. These white blotches are the result of the mutation itself and not because of a combination with the Pied gene. They can usually be distinguished from true pied by the softness of the white edge. That is, the edge of the "pied" area will have a soft appearance. True pied usually has a sharp, defined edge to its white areas."

zebra mutations can take on all sorts of looks...fun figuring it out. The male pictured with her is one of two pieds I had all the sudden show up in two different bloodlines.

what about white at the edges of the feathers, not the wing but the individual feather?

Entire whire feathers inbrandom places may be signs of split pied. My ng male has a single white feather on his back, I got my split pied hen from tje same store, and they breed their own birds there, so I think he carries the pied gene.
