Non-white belly?

Post by LuxandLolita » Sun Jan 08, 2012 3:46 pm

Wait, so the title might be misleading...
What does it mean if a normal zebra does not have a pure white belly but rather a golden whiteish belly???
i just saw that it is not normal if the belly is not white. what do you mean by this?? any help???

Ok so cream colored is normal. Lolita's belly is "cream" or so i believe.. so it is normal. Thanks! she is not black breast or anything. i actually don't know her genetics. and females are a bit harder to get because some don't get signs of certain mutations. goodness she could look grey but be anything!
this is the best i can get of her belly:

wow. isn't she beautiful?

I'm assuming that a non-white tummy means bird is split. My new boy has a fawnish tummy and looks like I might be getting a fawn chick from him. I love the different subtle colour differences.

In my experience it is normal for zebras to have buff or cream coloured bellies. I don't think it means it is split for anything and it does at least not indicate that females are split for fawn, since females can't be split for sex linked mutations.

In fact it is when normal zebras have clean white bellies that might indicate that they are split or are lightback.

Lux has an all white belly, it may not be that prominent in the pictures but it is pure white! i thought that was normal O.O
does it mean that he COULD be split to lightback??

It's a possibility, but it's not a very reliable proof, since it's hard to see if a bird is split for lightback or not, but supposedly they tend to have cleaner bellies. Still birds can easily have white bellies and still be normal. So the best way to make sure is through breeding and if you get lightback you can be sure that he is split.

Even if she is split to something, many mutations require both parents to be split, so you'd end up with normal chicks

hehe did you see the baby yet?? Baby #1 is SO fuzzy! are they all this fuzzy? my first clutch did not have fuzz the day they were born, or the day after!!! I STILL need a name for him/her, preferably a mutual name. i am going to figure it out eventually :)

She is a normal...normal female grays and males can have buff bellies. It does not indicate split to BB, the indicators for split to BB are a reduced tear and the hourglass pattern in the tail feather.

From looking at your girl she is definately a normal. Congratulations on the new baby!!!!
