New Male - Possible Seagreen or Other?

Post by nixity » Tue Feb 21, 2012 5:49 pm

This is one of the new males I picked up when I went to my friend Joe's place a few weekends ago and purchased some of the birds he was selling out of.

Genetically the male is OH WB Normal/Blue, but he has the appearance of being Seagreen or maybe is carrying a similar "Opaline" gene that Isa is experiencing in her flock.

This male is absolutely gorgeous, and now that quarantine is over (not that it matters since both birds came from the same place!), we have paired him with the BH WB Blue hen that also came from Joe.

I'm excited to see what happens.. but I just can't believe the depth of color he has throughout his back and rump. The pictures really do not even do it justice since they were taken with my phone.

The blue female who we've named Pebbles has interesting silver lining on the tips of her primary wing feathers. Pretty sure this is just an anomaly but it's cool nonetheless :)

He is beautiful! I like the abnormals myself :D
This color seems to be popping up in many areas of the country. I just got some pictures from a friend in Nevada that has a whole clutch showing the blue throughout. They, like me are breeding the green with blue throughout... whatever you want to call it opaline/seagreen... with another green back bird showing blue. I haven't tried breeding any of mine to blue yet. Do you think by breeding to blue that you may get more blue in the feathers? Well, being a split to blue I'm sure you will get more blue in the feathers... but I mean the ones that are GB :)

Glad to see you are getting back in to the gouldians :D

Beautiful boy, Tiffany! He does have a very opaline look to his back. I wish you would take some photos with a good digital camera for us. :)

With those blue accents, he is one of the prettiest birds I've seen. Can we have a pic of his front?

Thanks everyone! I snatched him up pretty quickly :)
Isa - Any picture of his other side? And of his hen?
So far this is the only picture I have of him, but I will try to get some shots with my DSLR this weekend when I go back. I didn't have it with me last weekend and we couldn't figure out how to force flash on my brother's camera so all the shots were coming out too dark.

This is his hen; she almost has the appearance of being a dark factor blue - I think if I remember correctly she came from a breeding from some birds that came from Brandon in Minneapolis, I think he's on the forum?:

Candace - Do you think by breeding to blue that you may get more blue in the feathers?
I'm not sure really, but I figured I would give it a shot and see if it passes down to the normals that are produced and see if there's any way to isolate or enhance it. The only girls I have that I would pair him to were both blues, that's really the only reason he was paired to a blue hen :)
My other little girl I have "betrothed" to Tang so my options were limited. This blue hen is a honker too, so I'm excited to see what she produces. They immediately fell in love with one another ;)

Hi Tiffany!
A beautyful bird I would have bought him also.
Its so interesting what different colors GA can have.
Two of my birds also have more blue on the backs as it is normal.
I will try to take pics.
I wish you greenblue colored chicks from this astonishing bird.
