Black Cheek Zebras
Will I ever produce other colors from 2 visual Black Cheek Zebras? I have produced a few female chicks and the one has Black cheeks and the other has more like the black bar on her face is smeared, I have a chick getting ready to fledge and I belief Its male because his cheeks are really black like the males and I don't remember the cheeks being so noticeable when they fledged before. Just wondering if there are other possible colors they can produce.

I have a black cheek hen who has yet to produce a black cheeked chick, hah. You never quite know what other mutations they carry.

A true visual BC pair pictured here
Should produce BC young, all young have full black cheeks.
Birdy, what do you have your BC paired with? BC is recessive, if you are pairing the mom with a normal you will get offspring that look like normals but carry a wider tear and they will be split to BC.

Well, as tempting as that is, I've already got too many zebras.
But they sure are pretty!

I resize them to 448 x 336 px in paint or Microsoft Office picture manager. Others use photobucket

My BC, Tori, is paired with a cream male. I have always called his colouring cream out of habit, but he looks more like a CFW...ish. His genes have thrown me for a loop before - I have another of his chicks whose mutation remains a mystery, even after posting pics here.
Their first clutch, all three appeared to be greys though none reached adult moult, sadly. No evidence of black cheeks that i could see. No illness, just a series of unfortunate events. In this clutch, there's a white one with a grey head and back, and fawn cheeks, (no idea of mutation) two appear grey, and the youngest one isn't feathered out enough to tell yet, but appears similar to this white and grey chick who fledged today. Not a black cheek among them, but I haven't been able to see the youngest two for a bit. The nest is rather small, can't get a good view.
I tend to screw up the nomenclature of mutations sometimes, but I know for sure that this hen hasn't produced a BC chick yet. Still, she makes some pretty chicks!

You won't get a full BC out of them...If only one parent is BC you will only get splits. The gene is recessive, if one prent carries it the offspring will be splits....you need a full or another BC to get full BC.
You can take one of the offspring from you pair and match it with a split to BC or full visual BC to get BC.

Re: Black Cheek Zebras
The mom in the bottom picture may be a split...the patch is there but not complete...so she may be a split which would explain the wide tear on the female offspring in the top picture...
This might help.
Father full BC x female split to BC
50% Black cheeked
50% Normal/Black cheeked
You may get offspring with wide tears and others with full patches.

Re: Black Cheek Zebras
She must be split if that BC hen in the top picture is her daughter
