Alright, I'm Trapped (canaries)
Well, this canary has my hooked!! If I were to breed my varigated yellow American singer male to a green hen, what color would the chicks be??
My uncle used to have a pair of small fluffy green canaries, I want one!
Also, what about my male to one of those orange colored hens? I hope I am making sence.

As far as breeding your yellow varigate to an all green hen ( which is a yellow base) would give you most likely a mixture of varigate and self green. If you bred him to an all orange hen you would get a mixture of yellow or orange with some or all being varigated. The orange would depend on if the bird is a true red factor or not. If itsn not a true red factor then all would be yellow and you could color feed them but thats not looked on very well as its sort of false advertisment. Once those birds molt out they would regain their normal yellow feathers whereas a true red factor stays red just a lighter hue.

I think I will go green, thanks! They are adorable!! If I got a redfactor hen, i would want a true redfactor, with no colorfeeding at all!! Now, is it bad to cross.let's say a gloster to.an american singer??Cath1068 wrote:As far as breeding your yellow varigate to an all green hen ( which is a yellow base) would give you most likely a mixture of varigate and self green. singer??
" A cross between the Border type canary and the Roller song canary, the American Singer possesses the best traits of both breeds- the musical song of the Roller and the pleasing looks of the Border. Its song is louder in volume than the Roller, but softer than the Border."

Re: Alright, I'm Trapped (canaries)
I think a gloster is a "type" canary so I wouldnt think it would be too bad. Just never breed 2 crested together but you know that from zebs already.....
As far as color feeding your future reds just do it the natural way. Thats what I do. I feed LOTS of carrots, greens ( kale, mustard greens and romaine) and quiko red factor eggfood. Quiko contains canthaxathin but its a small amount so it isnt harmfull to the birds. I am so glad you have crossed to the other side finally..... LOL the canary side that is......

My uncle had it for my other uncle, that uncle said I could have it because he didn't know how to take care of it. (I guess he actually wanted it, I have no idea why he said I could have it) and my Aunt told me I should give it back because she felt bad.
I gave him back earlier.

I'd give you one too if you lived closer. I do hope you finally get one for yourself. You should keep checking craigslist cuz I have been seeing more and more posted in my area and they seem to sell for about 60 dollars.
