I... I couldn't help myself. Stopped by the pet store after work to pick up some extra food dishes and couldn't help but look what new zebras they had. Noticed that they had the same big finch from about 2 weeks ago that I had been interested in. And well, you know how it goes.

BUT, what is it? It's got a red beak like a male, but no cheek patches or chest bars of any kind. Also not sure what kind of color mutation it is either. And it is by far the largest zebra I own. Help please?

Looks like a pretty silver isabel. I assume hen because when hens are ready to breed there beaks get dark. Rebecca, you are flooded with isabels. I will pull up a post about a siver isabel male who has no visual male signs, one minute

Hmmm I suppose it could be a hen. Guess I'll just have to wait until it lays an egg or sings to really know for sure!

if you combine BC with isabel the males have no markings, it may be a male, sure looks like one!! Are you gonna breed (if it is a male) to your other fawn/silver isabel?? You would get stunning chicks!!

I have quite a flock of Isabels, FF and FS in my group...both are female. The darker one is just a dark silver Isabel....is there a way you can post a full body shot to confirm.

The second one is a Silver Isabel. A pretty one at that!! This looks to be a female, the beak looks mature. The thing I found with the FS, often a male will present as a female silver Isabel upon fledging but over the course of molting you can see it is a male. Other FS fledge with apparent cheek patches starting.

Same with Isabels....by the time the beaks change you can be almost 99% certain of the sex.

If you would like more silvers you will need to mate these with either FF males or FS males. That is your best bet. You can mate them with Normals or fawns as well. Fawn Isabels are stunning birds as are the silvers.

Cindy those are actually 2 pictures of the same bird. Female it is then! Now I'm on the lookout for a good male to pair her with.

Rebecca, if you can, wait until your Isabel chicks get a bit older. If one is a male you can breed him to her, especially if the fawn isabel chick is male, you will get beautiful isabel!

Rebecca...oops...my apologises! The head shot was a bit darker than the full body shot, it looked like two different birds!!! In that case you are the proud owner a very stunning Silver Isabel!!!

I agree with Dante, that way the new bird has time to settle in!

I was trying to hold back and see if anybody else noticed you thought or thought themselves it was two birds

Dante, how do you know if it wasn't a test to see if you were paying attention.....LOL!!!

Cindy, you used that when you thought Elma's BB were penguins!!!!!!!
