Re: Crested WBC
Female White Crested first ( male BC crested below)
Question do you know if your white is a true pure white
http://www.efinch.com/species/whitzeb.htm
or a all white pied or a CFW hen, does she have a tear.
If she is a White crested paired with a BC
50% Crested (SF) /White Black cheeked
50% Normal/White Black cheeked
If she is an all white pied the offspring will have wide tears and will show split to pied (white wing edges, white under the chin, top of the head)....the chicks could be black with the split to pied since you adding color (Black back into the white pied)
50% Crested (SF) /White Black cheeked Pied
50% Normal/White Black cheeked Pied
If she is an CFW hen (hens can not carry the gene, it is sex linked)but she will produce split to CFW males
50.0% Females >> Gray, Crested(SF) / Black Cheeked
50.0% Males >> Gray, Crested(SF) / Black Cheeked , CFW
Pictures of your female and males will help a bit in what the outcome will be.....if you do not know the mutation of the white crested female I can only suggest pairing her with one of the BC males and seeing what the offspring look like then go from there.
By WBC do you mean BC CFW as pictured The above are mine....we would still need to know what mutation your white hen is.....if she is a CFW hen you can pair her with one of the male BC CFW males you may get young with wide tears possibly some with cheek patches and a 50% chance they are crested

Re: Crested WBC
Using BC Crested
Now with your BC Crested take your BC CFW and pair those...the offspring will be either BC or BC CFW and you stand a 50% chance of crested.
I have paired BC with BC CFW and the BC offspring come out lighter packed than the regular BC and the undersides are a cleaner white.
I separated the responses and chances using either your crested female and your crest BC male to make it easier to follow.
The above using your crested BC male and your BC CFW female would be your best bet...if in the first clutch you get all lighter BC and crested take the crested BC offsring and pair them with BC CFW or let the parents breed again.
Usually in my experience when pairing the BC with BC CFW you get a little of each the BC and the BC CFW as offspring.

Cindy,
Some time ago, there was a link on FINCHformum, to a website that allowed you to "build birds" with their computer program. You simply inputted traits of the male & female. When done, the computer program showed the bird. Do you remember which link this is? I've been watching the website hoping to encounter this link again (bookmark time)!

was it this one ?

the Designer section actually lets you get a glimpse of what the birds may look like.
There is a page to download a file with a more extensive calculator.

Re: Crested WBC
Question on the sex linked genes: Is a sex linked gene always on the male or female finch? Does it depend on the type of sex linked gene or the type of finch? For example, with NG Owl and Fawn Owls, the sex linked gene is with the male? So, does that mean a NG Owl cock/split to fawn paired with a NG hen or a Fawn Hen, produces...? What? Or a Fawn Hen with a NG cock, will they produce any fawn offspring? Still trying to get this genetics stuff.

Re: Crested WBC
Deborah, right at the top of this section of the forum is a sticky on Sex-linked Genetics. It explains all the different combinations and what you can expect. With sex-linked genetics, the males can be normal color, visible mutation, or be normal color yet carry the gene for the mutation (splits). With hens, they are all or nothing--normal color or visible mutation--females can never be split. So normal females can never carry the mutation gene.

I certainly won't be surprised when the program I'm looking for is on the website you showed, but I can't seem to make it pop up.
The program, well, you click the preferences you are curious about, and it pops up a drawing of the bird. I know you input the characteristics you're looking for.

Re: Crested WBC
Deborah if you have a fawn female it is like having a normal but she will give males that are split to fawn if paired with a normal. If paired with a split or full visual male you with get visual fawns.
I will give you examples
Normal male x fawn female (she will give male offspring, never females that are split to fawn but not visual unless paired with a visual fawn or split to fawn male)
50% Normal Females
50% Normal/Fawn Males
Normal/fawn male x fawn female
25% Normal Females
25% Normal/Fawn Males
25% Fawn Females
25% Fawn Males
Fawn male x fawn female
100% fawn females and males
Fawn male x normal hen
50% Fawn Females
50% Normal/Fawn Males
