ques. bout gould splits!

I just want to be sure i understand corecctly...i have babies from a pastel blue and a yb hen. So those babies are split blue? (genetics beginner here!) and I am wanting to keep one soooo as long as I get a split blue bird, then there is chance for blue babies correct? or is the pastel blue different from blue?
next question... am I reading correct that a dilute male will never show white breast? can they be purple breast split for white breast? or the dilutes cant carry white breast gene at all?

third question...I am picking up a yh/pb/yb hen this evening....to get visible orange heads I need a male showing yh or split to it right??
I have a dilute rh/pb male that his father was a rh/yh....so would that little bit of yh have passed to the dilute males enough to matter if I bred with a yh...or is that lost since his mom had no yh in her?

Thanks for anyone who can explain and/or answer!!! I can always count on everyone to help out....and I learn in process!!! :D :D

First question is correct - All your babies will be split for blue. Pastel blue is really a single factor silver but depending on chest color determines whether it appears visually blue or silver. If you put a baby with a split to blue there is a chance you will get babies of any color, blue, green, yellow and silver depending on the color of the birds you place together.

Second question is incorrect - A single factor or pastel can be white breast. My yellow back in my post that you commented on is dilute and he is white breast. They can also be split for white breast if they are purple breast.

Third question is correct - You would need either a split for yellow head or visual yellow head paired with your yellow head in order to get yellow head babies. There is a chance that your male could be split to yellow head but you wont know unless you breed him. Unless you pair a visual to a split you wont know for sure if the babies will be split until you breed them and find out.

First question:
Yes, all chicks are split to Blue. As long as you pair a split to Blue with either a Blue or another split to Blue you will/can get Blue chicks. A easy way to look at a "pastel" aka SFYellowBlue, is that it has one Yellow gene and two Blue genes.
Second question:
A "dilute" will ONLY have a PB and be male. "Dilute" is a made up american name for a SFYellow to explain the green body on a genetically Yellow bird. A White Breasted "dilute" (SFYb) will be visually yellow bodied.
Third question:
Yes, you would need two YH genes to produce YH chicks. There is a chance your male is split to YH with a father RH/YH but no guarantee. He could be split if he inherited the YH gene from the father.

perfect. thank you. I am going to pick up two gouldians tonight....I am picking up a male rh/pb/gb split blue....I am keeping my rh/pb/gb split blue hen. (she came out of the pastel blue and yb).

and the yh/pb-wb/yb hen. so for her I will shop for an orange head male....or try my chances with one of my rh/pb dilute males that have a small chance of being split yh. :D :D your helps is much appreciated! thanks :D

try this site

I use it when planning my breeding to see what will come out of various different pairings.

You can also download Carlos Matos "Gouldian Genetic Forecaster" for use offline. It's free and he also has a zebra one too.
