Pied babies?

I have a pied male (his dad was pied, mom was cfw) and a "fawn" female (her dads normal/fawn split, mom is normal). They had three babies and they all look normal. They are just starting to show their cheek colors and they all look to be males. Is it nomal for pied babies to look normal and then moult into their colors? Or are they hatched with the colors they are going to have? Just wondering if the babies are going to be pieds or normals. Thanks

Hi! If they already started to show their cheeck colors, and they seem normal they, won't be pied at all! Pied is very well seen when they fledge! Better luck with the next clutch!

usually if they so show pieds and not all do but may carry the gene they will show signs of splits....white wing edges, white under the chin, a bit of white on the head. Some hide the fact they carry a gene for pied and it dos not show up until they are bred and that also depends what they are bred to.

I have two fawns, father is split to OB and BB and had a pied gene hidden...some of the young look fawn with BB and OB split signs and do not show the pied side of their genetic make up...some do out of the clutch show the split signs mentioned above.

I have a pied mommy zebra who has had 8 babies over 2 clutches so far - not a sign of pied in any of them (yet!)

they are split but not showing any signs...they can pass it onto their young or if paired with another split to pied their young will show signs of pied.

Thanks! That's sort of what I figured. I may let them try again in a few months to see if they get anything different. Or I may pick one of the babies to breed with one of the new birds i'm getting. Black cheeked male and cream female have 5 babies that should be hatching soon! So excited to see what I get. They've had black cheek, cream cheek, silver, and fawns in the past.

Yup yup since I'm apparently just running around here and repeating what Cindy says. lol
They could be split to pied, but pied is recessive so the female would have to be split as well.
Pied offspring show white from the start, it can change in pattern each time they molt, but it's always there.

I think maybe your male is a split pied if only his dad was pied. That means his chicks will most likely not show any white.

I know my male is a split pied because I bred his parents and he was one of the babies. It was almost 6 years ago so couldn't remember what the babies looked like. I had hoped breeding him with a fawn would pass on the pied since it did when his dad had babies with a cfw.

If I breed one of the new babies (look normal) with say a pied/penguin split female, what would my chances be of getting a pied? Or should I try to back track and try to find another visibly pied male? (I hate splitting up pairs)

Barents that both look normal and one is split to pied passes the gene on...some of the young in the clutch can show no signs of being pied or some can show signs of being split to pied...White on the top of the head, under the chin and white wing edges.

if you bred your normal split to pied to another split to pied you will get pied.
