Help identifying silver gouldian head color

Post by camellia » Thu Aug 09, 2012 2:26 pm

Hi there, I've got a newbie question.

I have a silver white chested male gouldian. The breeder called him a straw head silver. I was assuming that he was a red head so I was very surprised to see that one of his offspring has a yellow head. I was wondering if there is any way to determine if he is red head or yellow head.

He is paired with a red headed purple chest green split to blue back hen.
This pair recently produced their first clutch and the offspring were:
yellow head, purple chest, green back male &
red or yellow? head purple chest, dilute? blue male (I'm not real sure on the coloring of this guy)

If I am doing the genetics forcast correctly then the silver male is single factor due to the fact that this pair produced a green back? Please correct me if I am wrong. I am very new to the genetics thing.

I will try and post pictures of the silver male

Also as a side question: I got this silver male from a rather sketchy source all the other gouldians that I purchased from this source passed away within a few months time. Heartbroken I gave up on breeding for 6 months so he was essentially quarantined for that time since he and the parsons were the only finches in my house during those 6 months. I treated all three with Iverlux, Amoxitec and probiotics. In hindsight I am wondering if that was enough of a quarantine prior to introducing him to the new hen and if there is anything that I should have or should be doing differently. They get BRU brand seed and soft food, and have access to spirulina, hatched, FVite, cuttle bone and ground oyster shell.

Visually it's impossible to determine. But I just wanted to say he is lovely, and his sons are quite handsome too. :)

There is no way to visually tell a RH from a YH Blue or YellowBlue. If you got a YH chick either both parents are split to YH or the male is YH and the hen split to YH. Also you are correct that your male is a SFYellowBlue because you got a Green chick. Because he's a WB the body is visually white instead of Blue.
They look very nice, best of luck

Thanks that helps a lot. I was afraid that there would be know way to tell on the head color.
