CFW + BC

Hey everyone

There will be a bird show in Richmond Hill Ontario Canada. I will be going this Saturday or Sunday. I might buy new zebra finches since I have sold most of my stock. I want to buy a CFW (Chestnut Flancked White) and BC (Black Cheek), but I do not know if I should get a male CFW or BC, female CFW or BC. I want to get this type of mutation of the offspring:

Which parents would get me this mutation? A male CFW and a female BC, or a male BC and a female CFW? Or it doesn't matter which is which?

If possible buy two unrelated CFW males and two unrelated BC hens.
Then breed their young together.

I raise the BC CFW...get a CFW male and a BC female...BC is recessive and CFW gene is only carried by the male.

pairing them this way will give you

50% Normal/Black cheeked Chestnut flanked white Males
50% Chestnut flanked white /Black cheeked Females

Do the pairing with 2 pairs and then pair the offspring.

Cindy, I had a friend also looking to make this combination recently. Does regular CFW make strong enough color? Is CCFW better - or does the BC work on its own to strengthen color?

It depends on what you want to achieve...CCFW with BC will give more of a odds of getting the BCCCFW (black in the tail bars, stronger black features)

CFW and BC will give you more of a light gray, the cheeks may not be as full strength as the BCCCFW.

Roy Beckham explains it well in the sections on combinations. http://www.efinch.com/species/cfwzeb.htm

I have just gotten into my breeding stock a crested CFW hen, she is with a BCCFW male/BB.

Thank you, Cindy. Zebras are so interesting - there's so much to know. I'm glad we have you and Roy Beckham as resources because it can get confusing fast! :)

Thank you for sharing!
