Yellow Body Star finch

Post by stavros01 » Sat Oct 20, 2012 4:07 pm

Hi,

does a genetic forecast exists for Star finches?
Or what mutations do i have to combine to get a Yellow body Star Finch?

I have not seen a genetic forecast for star finches (yet).

Yellow body appears to be a combination of a bird that is both Cinnamon and Fawn at the same time.

From what I can tell:
Cinnamon appears to be sex-linked recessive. (Zc)
Fawn appears to be autosomal recessive. (ff)

So a yellow-body star would genetically look something like:
ZcZc ff (cock)
ZcW ff (hen)

If you cross ZcZc /f (cinnamon split fawn cock) to ZW ff (fawn, non-cinnamon) hen you would get:

ZcW /f - cinnamon hens split fawn
ZcW ff - yellow-bodied hens

ZcZ /f - normal split for fawn & split for cinnamon cocks
ZcZ ff - fawn cocks split for cinnamon

Thank you, Crystal
But i think i made a mistake
I think my birds are fawn split to cinnamon X cinnamon
My doubt here is that i am not shore if fawn and cinnamon correspond to the same names/mutations in Portugal.

fawn = pastel or isabel??
and
cinnamon = brown???

Hi everyone,

If I breed a Normal split cinnamon split fawn cock star finch with a Cinnamon split fawn hen star finch what colour babies can we expect to get? Will we get any Yellow babies?

Your help will be forever appreciated!

Kind regards,
Morne.

Let me give this unanswered post a try. That is a complicated combination indeed, so the results are various. Fawn is autosomal recessive and cinnamon is sex-linked. Given: N=normal, F=fawn, C=cinnamon, *on average* (over time) you should see the following mutations and their respective percentages (hoping my calcs are correct):

Yellow body cocks @ 6.25%
C/F (cinnamon split fawn) cocks @ 12.5%
Cinnamon cocks @ 6.25%

F/C cocks @ 6.25%
N/F/C cocks @ 12.5%
N/C cocks @ 6.25%

Yellow body hens @ 6.25%
C/F hens @ 12.5%
Cinnamon hens @ 6.25%

Fawn hens @ 6.25%
N/F hens @ 12.5%
Fawn hens @ 6.25%

So yes you can obtain yellow bodied hens and cocks, but on average only 1 in 8 offspring will be yellow bodied.
