What do I have?

Post by love4finches » Wed Jan 16, 2013 12:10 am

I am guessing that the female is a BC and the male a N/BC/CFW. They are thowing off BCs like crazy. No greys and one BCCFW. What are these two? They are the parents.

Look like NG (normal grey) at a glance.

In regards to BC offspring do you mean full BC cheeks or a wider than normal tear. The hen looks split to BC (wide tear drop). She can not be split to CFW or CCFW since it is sex linked and only the male carries the gene. Your hen is NG/BC.

The male looks normal....this is a visual ID'ing. He does not have the wider than normal tears for a split. The only way to tell if he is a true split is if the offspring have the full black cheek and not just the wide tear like mom.

Can you post pictures of the young on this thread so we can see both parents and offspring?

I am not gonna hijack your thread,
but here is my ng split bc male

Image
Butti by Elma_Ben, on Flickr

you can tell he is split bc because:
he got black flank spots mixed in his white spots
near his throat bars..
and he got little black in his cheek, below his eye,
and his tear bends inward his cheek.

and, yes, your hen is split BC.

Great example of a split to BC male Elma!!

It would still help if you posted the young on this thread so we can help you figure the genetics out and what the young are.

All three babies are BC. Here are pics of one of them. I take the worst pics. Sorry. This is the best out of the bunch. Hope it can help. You don't think the dad's teardrops are "large" showing a split to BC. Since they are throwing off 95% BCs I have to assume both are split to BC and since I've gotten a couple of BCCFW the dad is split to CFW also. He is also showing white on top of the neck which is split to pied as well.

Since dad is split to CFW and you are getting BC CFW then they should be hens. Both parents would be split to BC. Is Dad showing any little markers like Elma's male is showing?

Cindy,
I have a pic of the mom and dad at the top of the page. I really don't know what to look for as far as markers go. Can you tell from the pics if there are any markers on the dad to show split to BC? I can't tell.

Hi,
Parents are first pics. Here are one of their babies. They had three. Two are definately BC. But what in the world is this one? The back of baby is brownish in color. (different pics of same baby).

This looks split to BC (thick tear) and split to CFW (white wing edges) (the tan or brownish back could be light back, if that is the case then the baby could be a /BCCFWLB). I am reluctant to say young are a particular mutation (s) until the bird is completely colored out but considering the background this is my opinion of the mutation break down of this one.

Can you post the BCCFW that the pair had?

Cindy,

Pic of baby is under another post:

Mom, Dad and their baby??????

dated 10/11/2012. HTH. Thanks.

Lyn

PS. Just looked on efinch and I'm be a monkey's uncle. I believe you hit it on the head (so to speak). Just rechecked the babies and 1 has the black cheeks and the other two look just like the fledglings in the pics on efinch. How many splits can one bird have?
